Applications are invited for a permanent position as Professor or Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University, Denmark ( The intended starting date is August 1st 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University is one of the leading European chemistry departments with research programs that range from medicinal chemistry to theoretical chemistry. It has a permanent staff of 29 full and associate professors, a support-staff of ~30 people, ~150 PhD-students and postdocs, and more than 500 students. The successful candidate will additionally be affiliated with iNANO, the interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center, which is among the leading nanoscience centers in Europe with strong research activities ranging from physics and chemistry to molecular biology (

The position is within the field of NMR spectroscopy of biological systems. The candidate is expected to have a strong track-record of developing and using advanced NMR-methods for studying the chemistry of biological systems. The candidate will be part of the Danish Center for Ultrahigh-Field NMR Spectroscopy, which is housed at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University. The candidate will be associated with iNANO which together with the Department of Chemistry host leading research groups within the fields of protein crystallography, biophysics, medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, and protein modelling as well as state of the art equipment e.g. cryo EM, SAXS, FRET, and super-resolution microscopes. The candidate will have access to the in-house equipment within the Danish Center for Ultrahigh-Field NMR Spectroscopy, including 950 MHz, 700 MHz, 500 MHz, and 400 MHz state-of-the-art spectrometers equipped for both solid- and liquid-state NMR, micro imaging and hyperpolarization. The application must contain a research plan that outline research visions and topics, and it must complement other activities at the Department of Chemistry and at iNANO.

The successful candidate must have a track record of relevant excellent scientific research documented through articles in peer-reviewed international journals. Clear evidence of independent research activities and success in obtaining research funding are essential. The candidate is expected to build an independent research group and conduct an active program of internationally recognized research. The ability to engage in cross-disciplinary research projects as well as collaboration with colleagues at the Department of Chemistry, iNANO, the Faculty of Science and Technology, and at other institutions will also be considered positively.

The successful candidate must be able to teach introductory chemistry courses as well as undergraduate and graduate-level courses in the field of (bio)physical chemistry and NMR spectroscopy. A non-Danish speaking candidate is expected to be able to teach in Danish on an undergraduate level within 3-5 years.

Further expectations for the two levels of appointment are:
Associate Professor: Candidates must have an excellent record of independent research accomplishments, scholarly achievement, teaching experience, an established record of external funding is essential, as well as concomitant strong evidence of emerging leadership in their field.
Professor: Candidates must have an extensive and excellent record of independent, ground-breaking research accomplishments as well as documented high-quality teaching and supervision experience. Candidates must document established leadership and management abilities as well as the ability to promote collaborative research and attract substantial external funding from e.g. research councils, EU and other funding sources.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
