Job description

The vacancy is part of the "ZERO, Energy-Autonomous Systems for IoT" programme jointly funded by NWO and industrial partners. The programme addresses the challenge of running Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices on energy harvested from their environment. The PhD candidate will contribute to sub-project "Ultra-Low Power Transponder" that will develop techniques for devices that can for example be mounted on bicycles with the goal of signaling their presence to other traffic participants and avoid collisions in this way. The PhD candidate will work in the Computer Architecture for Embedded Systems (CAES) Group of the Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Faculty of the University of Twente, The Netherlands in close collaboration with the company Dialog Semiconductor.

RESEARCH TOPIC

The PhD candidate is supposed to investigate design strategies for digital circuitry that can meet the low-power requirements of mentioned IoT devices. Assuming the use of CMOS technology, it is believed that this will a combination of mature and yet experimental design techniques including dynamically lowering supply voltages to levels currently considered unsafe. The resulting systems should still operate reliably by the use of special strategies to be developed in this project. The abstraction levels involved can range from individual transistors in standard cells to the communication between large IP blocks.

Requirements

Candidates for this position should have an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering by preference with a specialization in both digital and analog IC design. Next to excellent study results, they are expected to have a strong drive to perform research and strong communication skills, especially in speaking and writing English.

Next to performing research, Ph.D. students are supposed to spend a limited part of their time (max. 20%) on teaching activities.
