The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIFER), established by EDF and KIT, located in Karlsruhe is currently looking for a

Research Fellow f/m

in order to further develop the competences in the field of "Policy Analysis and Energy Market Studies" within the “Energy Planning and Geosimulation“ group.

The increasing share of decentralised and intermittent electricity generation raises challenges for EU member states and the European energy sector: network and market integration of electricity from renewable sources, security of supply, financial burden for consumers, and profitability of power plants. EIFER monitors measures that European governments and European utilities put into place in order to cope with these challenges and analyses their impact on energy markets and business models.

The new employee will be in charge of analysing the impact of policies, contextual changes or incentives in the field of electricity and heat markets. Research subjects include amongst others power networks, ancillary services, and emerging business models around flexibility services. This implies the political and legal analysis of larger reform projects with special regard to social transformations as well as the quantitative assessment of business opportunities and energy market developments.

The assigned tasks involve
  • monitoring and analysing regulatory developments in energy markets across Europe with focus on decentralised electricity and heat generation, writing regular insight notes on specific measures
  • quantitative analysis of energy market data
  • model based evaluation of emerging business concepts
  • exchange with relevant stakeholders in the energy sector
  • regular business trips: participation in conferences and communication of results to clients
Required qualifications are

The job applicant should hold a Master degree or equivalent in economics, industrial engineering or political science, and ideally has gained first professional experiences.
  • Profound knowledge on electricity markets, renewable energy and related policy frameworks
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English along with very good level of German, good knowledge of French appreciated
  • Synthetic and analytic thinking and the ability to understand systemic interactions with other fields
  • Good knowledge in data analysis and management of database systems is seen as an advantage
The applicants should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team. The duration of the position is initially limited to two years, starting in October 2017.
