Scientific Head of the Bioinformatics Unit (f/m)

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) / German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv). Leipzig, 09.03.2017

The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) is one of four National Research Centres funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is located in the city of Leipzig and jointly hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), the University of Leipzig (UL), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). It is supported by the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association, and the Free State of Saxony. Its central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and data-driven theory in this emerging field. The concept of iDiv encompasses the detection of biodiversity, understanding its emergence, exploring its consequences for ecosystem functions and services, and developing strategies to safeguard biodiversity under global change. The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, in cooperation with iDiv, offers the following position starting as soon as possible, initially limited until September 30th, 2020, and planned to be extended until September 30th, 2024:

Scientific Head of the Bioinformatics Unit

Fulltime: 100 %, iDiv Leipzig

The salary will be determined up to pay grade 14 TV-L depending on the assigned tasks and personal qualifications.

Embedded in this active research environment, the Bioinformatics Unit (BIU) is a central hub and fundamentally important for research projects at iDiv. Many research groups of iDiv need bioinformatics expertise for their highly diverse research tasks. The duty of the BIU is to support iDiv research groups with their computational expertise, for example by developing new algorithms for genomics, metagenomics, or metabolomics datasets.

One of the main tasks of the head and the two postdocs of the BIU is to consult the family of diverse researchers at iDiv and to collaborate with them to ensure a professional analysis of their data so that their scientific questions are addressed in a statistically and algorithmically sound manner. In addition, the head and the postdocs of the BIU are expected to design and provide courses and workshops on bioinformatics within yDiv, the graduate program at iDiv, and to coordinate the computational work of iDiv with the Biodiversity Informatics Unit (BDU) and sDiv, the synthesis centre for biodiversity sciences at iDiv. Furthermore, they are expected to initiate and actively participate in joined research projects with iDiv members by acquiring grants from the European Union, the German Science Foundation, iDiv, or sDiv. Last but not least, the head and the postdocs of the BIU are expected to perform and publish novel bioinformatics research with a high impact on iDiv and beyond.

Due to the broad portfolio of activities at iDiv, the head of the BIU is expected to have profound knowledge of and expertise in the main fields of bioinformatics and NGS data analysis, in particular computational genomics and transcriptomics, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, population genomics, phylogenomics, epigenomics, or metabolomics.
