In the past decade, psychology and other empirical sciences have been stirred by dramatic revelations of questionable research practices, leading to low reproducibility. The resulting crisis of confidence has led to a renewed interest in improving research practices.

PHD RESEARCH ON REPRODUCIBILITY OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE

During your PhD, you will collaborate with Wolf Vanpaemel, Francis Tuerlinckx and their team who are all part of the research group Quantitative Psychology and Individual Differences at the KU Leuven-University of Leuven. Our research group is an international and performant research environment, consisting of 6 professors and 25 PhD students and postdocs, with very diverse backgrounds (besides psychologists, also physicists and engineers). See https://ppw.kuleuven.be/okp/people/wolf_vanpaemel/ and https://ppw.kuleuven.be/okp/people/francis_tuerlinckx/ for further information and relevant publications.

The KU Leuven-University of Leuven is a research oriented institution and is consistently ranked among the top research universities in Europe. Leuven is one of the oldest university towns in Europe, about 30 km from Brussels. It has a rich history, culture and night life, and a unique friendly atmosphere.

Project

The goal of the PhD research is to develop and apply novel methodologies to increase the reproducibility of psychological research.

In particular, your PhD research involves the following possible topics:

  • the further development and application of the multiverse analysis (see https://ppw.kuleuven.be/okp/_pdf/Steegen2016ITTAM.pdf for more information; in collaboration with Andrew Gelman from Columbia University, US);
  • the development and application of meta-studies (a novel method as an alternative to the traditional meta-analysis, in collaboration with Paul De Boeck from Ohio State University, US);
  • the development and application of a pre-registration protocol to test predictions of psychological theories and mathematical models;
  • the design and administration of innovative experiments to test model predictions;
  • the contribution to the development of www.curatescience.org (in collaboration with Etienne LeBel from University of Western Ontario, Canada).
As a PhD candidate, you are encouraged to explore your own research interests along these lines. You will be supported by a dedicated research team. In addition to your research, you will contribute to the teaching of statistical or methodological courses (up to on average 100 hours yearly).

Profile
  • You have (or will soon have) a masters degree, with a solid background in research methods and/or statistics. We welcome, among others, Masters of (Quantitative) Psychology, Statistics, Economics, Physics, (Mathematical) Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • You have a profound knowledge of statistics and data analysis, or you are eager to acquire the necessary skills.
  • You are rigorous and passionate about improving research.
  • You are independent but also willing to work in a team.
  • You have excellent English reporting skills (for oral and written communication). Knowledge of Dutch is not required.
Offer

We offer:
  • a full-time PhD position, initially for 1 year, starting on September 16, 2017, and renewable to a maximum of 4 years;
