9 PhD or postdoc* positions (early stage researchers) in Lubricant Impregnated Slippery Surfaces - LubISS* At the time of recruitment by the host organization the applicant needs to be in the first four years of their research careers. Textured substrates which are infiltrated with a lubricant form a new class of functional surfaces, referred to as Lubricant Impregnated Slippery Surfaces (LubISS). Texture is decisive for capillary forces to retain
the lubricant in place a distinctive feature of LubISS is that (water) droplets, ice crystals and microorganisms slide off these surfaces very easily. Capillary forces also bring about a so-called annular wetting ridge which surrounds liquid droplets and solid particles. However the latter influences the properties of resting and moving droplets and can drag lubricant along. Depending on the dominant interactions and forces, droplets can even be cloaked by a thin layer of lubricant. In order to design durable and environmentally friendly LubISS,our network strives to understand the interplay between the physical- and chemical interactions, the surface topography, the lubricating film and the droplet under both static and flow conditions. LubISS is the first European Training Network with the main objectives of designing, characterizing, and modelling low adhesive easy-to-clean slippery surfaces for anti-icing and anti-fouling. In a coordinated effort among 9 world-class academic institutions and industrial partners from 6 European countries (Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands, Switzerland), advanced lubricant impregnated surfaces will be developed. In order to design durable and environmentally friendly LubISS, our network strives to understand the interplay between the physical- and chemical interactions, the surface topography, the lubricating film and the droplet under both static and flow conditions. We will characterize the dynamics of single droplets but also of two liquids moving over each other. The understanding of two-phase flow will help to design lubricant impregnated surfaces that don’t suffer from lubricant depletion. If depletion cannot be avoided, approaches to replenish drained lubricant will be developed. Promising methods to design high end surfaces include nanoparticle based techniques, nanofibers or thermal spraying. We will investigate the wear resistance of the surfaces and their performance as icephobic coatings for aerospace applications. Ice and wind tunnels are available. Furthermore, we will quantify the adhesion of bacteria and other microorganisms on impregnated surfaces, making use of the combination well adapted surface functionalization and microstructuring.

ESR (early stage researcher) shall at the time of recruitment by the host organization be in the first four years of their research careers.
- Applicants may be on a PhD program but cannot be PhD holders at the day of signing their employment contract.
- The position is open to applicants of all nationalities provided that the European Commission's Mobility Rule is satisfied: "At the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account."
- Maximum and preferred period of employment: 36 months
- The project provides full funding for tuitions fees and salary.
- The successful candidate will receive:
- Living allowance (multiplied by the country correction factor which varies between 0.98 and 1.2): 3110 euros per month.
- Mobility allowance: 600 euros per month.
- Family allowance (if applicable): 500 euros per month.
What we expect
Potential candidates must have an excellent Master (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, or engineering. Beyond the passion for and experience in research, we expect good language and communication skills in English, flexibility as well as focused research.
