GTP-2018-TEC-MT - Thermal Engineering
Within the Technical Directorate, the Thermal Division (TEC-MT) is the centre of competence for thermal engineering, covering design, analysis and verification of manned and unmanned space systems. The Division provides technical support to ESA projects and Concurrent Design Facility studies and is responsible for the definition and implementation of technology development activities within its domain of competence, covering passive and active cryogenic cooling, heat transport, heat storage and heat rejection, thermal insulation, thermal protection, thermal analysis tools and methods, thermal and mechanical verification including testing. The Division is also responsible for maintenance and operation of the Mechanical Systems Laboratory with a number of test facilities covering thermal cycling in vacuum (from cryogenic to temperatures of 500 degC), thermal balance test, Coefficient of Thermal Expansion measurements, Multi-Layer Insulation performance measurements, thermal conductivity, vibration testing.
The Division is also responsible for the development of analysis tools and methods for the thermal subsystem including for specific thermal technologies (e.g. two-phase systems, cryo-coolers) as well as the data exchange with other disciplines (e.g. thermoelastic) and for the coordination of these tools and technologies within and outside the Agency.
- you will first familiarize yourself with the Agency’s thermal analysis tools - ESATAN-TMS, by preparing simple Geometrical Mathematical Model (GMM) and Thermal Mathematical Model (TMM) and perform simple analysis. This task will naturally depend on your background and previous experience with these tools
- you will then perform thermal modelling including steady state/transient analyses of instruments, subsystems and complete satellites following familiarisation with project requirements
- you will then use thermal models and perform correlation with either ground test or flight data
- besides working on the thermal analysis of a specific spacecraft, it is also possible to work on methodologies to improve the thermal analysis process, for example by assessing and prototyping advanced algorithms, working on stochastic methods and optimisation, improving data exchange with other engineering disciplines. Analysis methods and tools in support of thermal testing can also be investigated, looking at model correlation, error localisation, spatial and temporal extrapolation of measured temperatures, etc.
Possible subjects for the trainee could be:
- robust TCS design for small satellites
- general thermal design and thermal analysis for TCS and other applications
The basic idea is to involve the trainee as much as possible in on-going, actual projects to learn about the real life of a space thermal engineer and to get as much as possible hands-on experience.

- applicants should have just completed (cconclusion not older than two years) or be in their final year of a university course at Master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline
- experience in applying engineering tools - knowledge of thermal modelling tools as e.g. ESATAN-TMS would be an asset
- applicants should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multi-cultural environment, both independently and as part of a team
- German citizenship is absolutely necessary
- candidates must be fluent in English or French, the official languages of the Agency. A good proficiency in English is required
