Postdocs for developing future energy technologies

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) carries out research on advanced fuel cell and electrolysis technologies. We now seek a number of postdocs to strengthen our research on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and alkaline electrolysis (AEC).
SOFC: Fuel cells are an efficient and environmentally friendly technology for making electrical power. Of many fuel cell varieties, an SOFC is an all-solid-state energy conversion device that generates electricity and heat by electrochemically combining fuel and oxidant gases across an ionic conducting ceramic membrane. SOFCs offer very high efficiency in converting between chemical and electrical energy.
AEC: The share of fluctuating electricity supply from wind and solar power is strongly increasing, which puts in demand effective technologies for energy storage. Hydrogen production through electrolysis of water using systems based on AECs offers a promising technology for large scale grid storage, as well as a sustainable route to H2 production for the chemical industry.
DTU Energy is recruiting a number of postdocs to strengthen our R&D in above areas involving material synthesis, shaping and manufacture of cell components and finally performance characterization.
Responsibilities and tasks
You will be a key player in the SOFC and/or AEC team, carrying out specific component and concept development tasks.
As all team members, you will bring your competences and together with the team, you will develop strategies to improve performance, robustness and cost of these future technologies. This involves solving challenges and exploring innovative ideas.
We aim to strengthen the teams both on component synthesis/manufacture and component testing.
Component synthesis/manufacture
You will focus on synthesis of materials and processing of multilayer functional ceramic architectures with tailored porosity and microstructure. The work will be based on up-scalable shaping processes, such as screen printing, tape casting and dip-coating.
Component testing
The testing of the manufactured components and devices focus on identifying what limits electrical performance and lifetime, both on single cell and stack level. This work will involve detailed electrical and electrochemical characterization and post mortem analyses by microscopy and XRD. Understanding the loss mechanisms will lead to further development at material and component level.
Both the AEC work and the SOFC work involve close collaboration with industrial partners.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics, or similar.
  • Good communication skills in both written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently within the team, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, to be part of a dynamical multi-disciplinary group, and to network both with project partners and international collaborators.
  • Experience in the field of SOFC or AEC will be advantageous.
  • Documented experience in one or more of the following specific areas is needed;
    • Synthesis of materials relevant to these technologies
    • Colloidal chemistry, Shaping techniques, Sintering
    • Electrochemical characterization methods
    • Corrosion
    • Glass and glass ceramic materials
    • Mechanical properties of ceramics
The working environment
DTU Energy is among the world‘s leaders in research and development of solid oxide fuel cell and electrolysis cell technology and several other energy conversion technologies. We have excellent facilities and competences for fabrication, testing and characterization of these. DTU Energy has around 220 employees.
Terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary will be agreed with the relevant union.
The period of employment is for a fixed duration of two years.
The place of work is DTU Risų Campus in Roskilde, Denmark.
