W2 University Professorship
Head of the Department of Nautical Systems of DLR‘s Institute of Communications and Navigation combined with the W2-Professorship for Multi-Sensor Systems at the University of Rostock
Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of navigation systems and algorithms, ideally combined with some experience in the conception of such systems. He or she has published
papers, which have found international recognition, in preferably several of the following areas:
- Sensor fusion and Bayesian estimation techniques
- Satellite navigation
- Reliable estimation of position and attitude – "augmentation systems"
- Inertial navigation
- Scanning procedures such as radar, sonar or lidar
- Applications in a nautical environment
The Department of Nautical Systems is based in Neustrelitz and has around fifteen members of staff. Looking ahead the department will be represented at a location DLR plans to set up near the University of Rostock, the Warnemünde Nautical Institute and the Research Port of Rostock.

The applicant will be hired by the DLR as Head of the Department of Nautical Systems. The DLR employment contract will be subject to private law. At the same time the applicant will be appointed W2-Professor for Multi-Sensor Systems at the University of Rostock‘s Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering based on the Thüringer Modell (Thuringian model), § 59 Para. 7 LHG M-V. The appointment is initially for a fixed duration of five years with the possibility of permanent employment after favorable evaluation.
Being employed by the DLR includes the obligation to give two units of lectures per week at the University of Rostock during the course of each semester.
Teaching skills and achievements as well as proficiency in scientific and academic organizational matters will be taken into account. For this reason we ask applicants to outline their teaching performance together with their motivation as regards future teaching assignments, and describe their past experience in scientific management. Applicants are expected to be able to demonstrate active involvement and practical experience in the acquisition of third-party funding.
