The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in
research and teaching. At the beginning of 2019, the „Africa Multiple“ Cluster of Excellence (EXC 2052) will commence
operations with funding from the Excellence Strategy of Germany‘s federal and state governments. The aim of the cluster is
to reconfigure African studies at both the conceptual and the structural levels. The cluster is conceived as a transformative
space for the systematic study of African and African diasporic ways of life, enabling new forms of inter- and transdisciplinary
cooperation.
The new position within the cluster need to be filled by January 1st, 2019 or soon thereafter. Successful applicants will
carry out a wide variety of activities in a dynamic and motivated team focusing on a strategically important field of work.
Academic Coordinator for the
division „Research“ (E 14, TV-L)
The position is under the leadership of the Vice Dean of Research of the Cluster of
Excellence and supports him/her in planning the research programme of the Cluster of
Excellence. In particular, this includes the following responsibilities:
- setting up and organizing the Knowledge Lab, the basis for the theoretical and methodological
work of the Cluster of Excellence;
- creating working formats for dealing with theory, methods, and transdisciplinarity in the field of
reflexive African research;
- organizing workshops in cooperation with the other divisions in the Cluster of Excellence;
- organizing and planning the work of fellows in the scope of the Bayreuth Academy of AdvancedAfrican
Studies within the Cluster of Excellence.
Responsibilities relating to academic administration include the following:
- coordinating and monitoring activities in the programme;
- managing the reporting and evaluation system as well as the minutes taken at meetings;
- supporting domestic and international guests and collaborations in cooperation with the
division „Internationalization“.
We welcome applications from candidates with the following profile:
- an above-average doctorate in a subject in the Humanities, Social Sciences, or Cultural Studies
relating to Africa and/or the African diaspora;
- experience in planning and applying for funding of research projects;
- interest in current scientific policy and theoretical debates;
- excellent organizational and coordination skills;
- fluent in German and English (written and spoken) and ideally additional foreign language
skills;
- experience in interdisciplinary and intercultural communication;
- preferably experience in science management and administration at a university or nonuniversity
research institution;
- commitment, high flexibility and resilience, team orientation, and independence.
If the personal and collectively agreed conditions are met, the salary will fall into the pay grade
E 14 TV-L. The place of employment is Bayreuth. The successful applicant will initially be hired
for a period of four years. An extension is possible if the activities are successful and if the
requirements of WissZeitVG are met.
