As part of its research commitment to the field of Criminology, the Faculty of Law of the Humanities and Social Sciences Group at KU Leuven announces a vacancy for a part-time academic staff member within the Leuven Institute for Criminology (LINC).

Duties
Research
As professor you will develop a broad internationally oriented research programme in criminology with a focus on victimology, restorative justice and forensic social work and mental health. It concerns both theoretical and fundamental as well as empirical and applied research.
The research programme should be based on a broad definition of victimhood and should aim at a criminological, juridical and institutional dimension of victim support. It should not only focus on the classical criminal procedure but also on conventional and/or alternative models of conflict resolution such as restorative justice. Special attention must be paid to the international and cross-border dimension of this area and the resulting specific and complex questions.
The research programme should be designed in a way that it contributes to the theoretic, methodic and thematic innovation of criminology. It fits within the Leuven tradition to approach criminology also from a person and community oriented perspective, with a special attention for the most vulnerable.
You must be capable of acquiring competitive funding.
Education
You will be involved in the coaching of the internships in the area of criminal justice and forensic health care. You will develop a sound knowledge of the Belgian criminal justice system from a criminological, legal and institutional perspective.
This education must meet the requirements that are prescribed for academic education with regard to level, orientation and academic standards. The candidate‘s teaching must dovetail with KU Leuven‘s concept of education. The candidate‘s commitment to the quality of the entire educational programme in general is considered self-evident.
Service
It is expected of the candidate that he/she be willing to contribute to the services the university provides to the community. The candidate will also be at the disposal of the government, the society and the press for the provision of scientific services and information.
With a view to mutual reinforcement, you will autonomously develop cooperation with the relevant services and actors in the domain of victimology, forensic social work and mental health and restorative justice.
The candidate is expected to be prepared to carry out policy tasks within the faculty.
Profile
Interested candidates should hold a PhD in Criminology or in a discipline related to criminology, showing clear expertise in the field of criminology. The applicant must have a profound knowledge of criminological theories. An applicant not holding a PhDin criminology should have a proven expertise in the area of criminology, including a sound knowledge of general criminological theories.
He/she must have demonstrable expertise in conducting empirical quantitative and/or qualitative scientific research regarding complex issues of criminality and security, and how society can deal with these issues. More specifically you have demonstrable expertise with scientific research about the explanation of crime and victimhood, the prevention of criminality, the reaction to deviant and harmful conduct and ways and methods of dealing with conflicts between persons and society and between groups and cultures.
You have an excellent research file, which is shown in international peer-reviewed scientific publications and the development of your own research projects. You have access to an international network of high standards. Your publications and/or other research performances show originality, abstraction and openness for intra- and/or interdisciplinary research.
Candidates have the necessary skills to teach students from various disciplines in order to allow them to acquire criminological knowledge and skills. Experience in academic teaching, with demonstrated didactical skills, is considered as a plus. Candidates with evaluation results of prior educational experience are invited to submit these in their file.
The candidate should have the necessary social and professional skills to work and cooperate in a flexible way in LINC, in the Research Unit of Criminal law and Criminology, and in the Faculty of Law.
Proficiency in English is required.
The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch respectively English to the required standard.
The applicant should submit a proposal of a medium term research program to his application file in the area of victimology, including restorative justice, and a vision text about education. Candidates whose teaching has been evaluated in the past, are asked to include these evaluations in their application file as far as possible.
