The chair of Elastomer Technology and Engineering (ETE) at the University Twente In Enschede (NL) is part of the Faculty of
Engineering Technology, embedded in the Department of Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces and Systems (MS3). This group has a
vacancy for an assistant professor with background in Mechanical Engineering. Experience in plastics, elastomers and/or
elastomeric composites is appreciated.
Research: One of the research areas within MS3, and in particular within ETE, is fiber reinforcement; so
far handled by Emeritus Professor J. Noordermeer. This topic shall be continued by the Assistant Professor. Knowledge and
experience concerning rubber/fiber interactions, testing of material properties, process technology as well as structural
analysis by means of Finite Element techniques will form a good basis to exploit the research area.
We are looking for an enthusiastic independent researcher who can identify relevant research questions in this context, plan
and execute theoretical as well as experimental research and publish the findings in renowned journals. The Assistant Professor
has to acquire external funding (European, national, or corporate/institutional) for junior researchers (PDEng, PhD and Postdoc
positions), for whom she/he will provide daily supervision. Furthermore, she/he should have a record of publications in international refereed journals.
Teaching: The Assistant Professor will also be responsible for a part of the education of the chair; this
comprises lecturing in the Bachelor and Master phases as well as supervising BSc- and MSc-students. The classes ETE is
responsible for are focused on elastomers as well as thermoplastics. The university provides a training on teaching,
which has to be followed within the first two years of the appointment (University Teaching Qualification, UTQ).
(Almost finished) PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
Experience or strong affinity with experimental research and development in elastomers
Very good publication record
Ability to attract external research funding
Good teaching skills
Good coaching skills (BSc, MSc, PDEng and PhD students)
Team player, also in multidisciplinary teams
Independent, creative researcher and organizer
Excellent written and oral communication skills (English)

Conditions of employment
We offer a challenging full-time position in an inspiring multidisciplinary and international environment. The successful
candidate will initially be employed for a period of 2 years, which will be extended and become tenured after a positive
evaluation. The salary scale, depending on your experience and qualifications, extends to a max. of € 4.654,- gross
per month, based upon the job profile of Assistant Professor, level 2 (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement
