Associate Professor in Onboard Space Systems
The Onboard Space Systems in the Division of Space Technology at the Department of Computer Science, Electrical
and Space Engineering has an opening for an Associate Professor position contributing to the group’s growing
activities. The mandate of the group is to provide research and education on systems for control, observation,
instrumentation, communication and manipulation in the space and near-space environments and on the planetary
surfaces. Some of the research subjects include nanosatellite design, free-flying robot manipulators, satellite
formation flying, satellite/robot teams for space debris removal, planetary exploration, and asteroid redirection
and resource mining. The group has established a Nanosatellite Laboratory hosting the state-of-the-art equipment
and facilities for the fabrication, integration, and environmental and hardware-in-the-loop tests and simulations,
as well as a ground station for tracking and operating miniaturized satellites. The facilities are currently used
for the complete cycle of design and development of a 2U cubesat for the QB50 international project. Current
collaborations with the industry include joint research and development projects with Swedish Space Corporation,
OHB-Sweden and RUAG Space. The group also has research collaborations with international academic partners including
universities in Canada, Brazil and Spain.
The Division of Space Technology provides a number of educational programs at the graduate level, including the
international SpaceMaster program in collaboration with several other universities in France, Germany, Japan,
and the USA. The Division is based at the Space Campus in Kiruna, the space capital of Sweden. The town is
located on the 67th parallel north, about 150 km above the Arctic Circle, which enables a set of unique conditions
for space-related research and industry. It is home to an array of space activities, including the Swedish Institute
of Space Physics (IRF) and the SSC-Esrange Space Center, along with a consortium of multinational companies. Several
ESA’s antennas are also located in Kiruna, providing facilities for tracking, telemetry and radiometric measurements.
Kiruna is a popular tourist attraction for its icehotel, midnight sun and northern lights. It also hosts the world’s
largest underground iron ore mine.
Onboard space systems includes systems for control, instrumentation and communication in the upper atmosphere and in space.
Of particular importance are reliable, radiation resistant low-power electronic systems and miniaturization of these.
The appointed Associate Professor will assist the Chaired Professor in all activities for the growth of the group’s research
subjects. The employment as Associate Professor includes teaching, seminars and examination at all levels, supervision of PhD
students and research. The employment also involves responsibility in interacting with the surrounding community and industry,
and presenting the research to a broader audience.
Due to the multidisciplinary nature of Space Engineering, the appointed Associate Professor is expected to closely interact
with other research groups within the Department and beyond, and utilize knowledge and expertise of a broad spectrum of
Persons are eligible to be appointed as Associate Professor if they have displayed both scientific proficiency as well as
pedagogical proficiency. In order to meet the requirements for the position, the applicants must;
Have documented their proficiency in a scientific body of work that corresponds to at least two doctoral dissertations
Demonstrate well-documented proficiency in supervision at the third-cycle level and have been the assistant supervisor for at least one third-cycle student for at least two years,
Have demonstrated pedagogical proficiency and have completed university pedagogy training equivalent to 7.5 credits, or have in some other way acquired the equivalent knowledge,
Have been active as an independent researcher, normally for at least three years after earning their Doctorate
The following criteria for assessment will be applied:
Documented scientific qualifications
Documented qualified teaching skills
Other assessment criterias: (weighted equally)
Documented international cooperation.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Experience in planning and performing space-related projects.
Experience with software and hardware development.
Experience with instrument and payload development.
Experience in obtaining external research and development grants.
Have cited publications about related subjects in refereed journals and conference proceedings
