Associate or Full Professor of Early Childhood Education/Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Education invites applications from tenured faculty members with strong teaching and research expertise in early childhood education with an emphasis on urban communities. The applicant should demonstrate commitment to and experience in fostering justice through equity-focused research and pedagogy. The successful candidate will exhibit the ability to serve in a leadership role in a diverse, collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
The candidate will work with both the Department of Education and the Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities. In working with the Department, the successful candidate will continue to develop a strong research agenda, teach undergraduate/graduate courses, collaborate with community partners, and engage in extensive grant writing. The candidate will also support the work of the Sherman Center for Early Learning through service on its advisory committee, and engagement with the Center’s diverse initiatives.

The Education Department
The mission of the UMBC Education Department is to advance research on teaching and learning and to develop educators who are caring, thoughtful, knowledgeable, skilled, and responsive. We expect our graduates to respect diversity, to be leaders in their schools, and advocates for democracy and social justice. The education department offers a wide range of NCATE/CAEP accredited programs that include early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education, and TESOL that are nationally recognized by professional specialization associations such as NAEYC. The department is also engaged in a number of state, national and international efforts, including an expansive network of Professional Development Schools.
The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities
The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities (Sherman Center) is a new multidisciplinary center, established with a generous gift from the George and Betsy Sherman Family Foundation. The Sherman Center will expand UMBC’s efforts to build a strong foundation for learning among young children in Baltimore City and develop effective early childhood education practices for urban schools through applied research, teacher professional development, and partnerships with schools, families, and communities. The center will also support the university’s established and new school partnerships by identifying and working with academic leaders in Baltimore City.

Associate or Full Professor
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
● Doctoral Degree in Early Childhood Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Education Policy, or a related field
● Demonstrated commitment to and experience in fostering justice through equity-focused research and pedagogy
● An established research agenda with a strong record of published scholarship
● Expertise in collaborating, writing, and acquiring multidisciplinary grants
● Teaching experience with learners in Pre-K-3 schools (minimum three years)
● Teaching experience in higher education
● Demonstrated success in leadership and collaboration including mentorship
Additional qualifications that will be considered include:
● Research and teaching experience with Latinx populations
● Teaching experience with learners in PK-3 urban classrooms
● Strong record of seeking external grant funding
