As part of the research led by Einstein Visiting Fellow (EVF) Prof. Dr. Edriss Titi, the interdisciplinary collaborative research centre (CRC) 1114 „Scaling Cascades in Complex Systems“ offers this PostDoc position. The mathematical modeling of cloud formation and precipitation has been the most demanding task in weather forecasting and climate science for decades. In recent years, Prof. Titi has established rigorous key mathematical results in multiscale analysis and stochastic modelling as well as in data analysis and data assimilation, which are of central importance in the context of weather and climate research. He is spearheading further major developments in this direction at the international level within the EVF project. For this, the CRC 1114 provides an excellent research environment.
Job description: The applicant will work closely with Einstein Fellow Prof. Edriss Titi (Texas A&M University, USA, and Weizmann Institute (Israel)), embedded in the Collaborative Research Center 1114 „Scaling Cascades in Complex Systems“. Research work will address topics of „Multiscale Moist Atmospheric Flows: Rigorous analysis, ensemble downscaling, and data assimilation“ and encompass a blend of justifications of multiscale asymptotics, numerical analysis, and modern approaches to data-driven modelling.
Requirements: Phd in Mathematics or the Natural Sciences
Desirable: Excellent knowledge in the analysis of partial differential equations, with emphasis on the equations of fluid mechanics, gasdynamics, or the model equations from geophysical fluids. Solid background in numerical analysis and scientific computing, including the handling of complex application codes.
