Science Communication and Public Relations Officer (f/m)

The Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens (to be established)
of Max Planck Director Prof. Emmanuelle Charpentier is seeking a
Science Communication and Public Relations Officer
(CRISPR-Cas and infection microbiology research)
for a full-time employment (39 hours/week) of initially 2 years.

  • Coordination and management of the public and scientific communication of the Unit at the national and international level (media, press, societies, foundations, academies, scientific events, conferences, seminars, retreats …)
  • Liaising and answering enquiries from media and press, individuals and other organizations (academies, societies, foundations) via phone and email, preparation of official letters and requested documentation
  • Writing, editing and proof-reading manuscripts and releases for a public audience (focus: mainly CRISPR-Cas research area)
  • Coordination and management of media interviews with disposition to travel and attend events in Berlin, in Germany and abroad
  • Support in film, video, photo, flyer and booklet production
  • Personal assistance for interviews (preparation of Q & As)
  • Engaging with national and international media
  • Gathering and filing media coverage (focus: mainly CRISPR-Cas research area)
  • Support in external presentation of the Unit research for the public and large scientific community including the Max Planck Society (creation, preparation, editing and management of illustrations and presentations, flyers, posters, reports of activities…)
  • Independent and pro-active preparation and implementation of concepts for public relations in multimedia platforms
  • Support in editing and managing webpages, communication and multimedia platforms
  • An University degree and expertise in natural biological science is a requirement
  • Experience as science communicator and PR officer in a German research institution is considered as an advantage
  • Experience with media in the field of CRISPR-Cas9 is considered as an advantage
  • Perfect knowledge in German (native speaker)
  • An indispensable requirement for the candidate is to speak and write in excellent English and German
  • Profound interest in the research topic of CRISPR-Cas and other topics of the Unit (for more information visit
  • High degree of competence for social media platforms
  • Excellent competence in software applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, webpage content management systems
  • Friendly disposition, confident and responsible work ethics
  • Working independently and as part of an international team
  • Creativity and initiative in multiple disciplines related to the position
  • Openness and interest in learning new tasks, ability to multi-task, meet very tight deadlines
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills, ability for structured work and taking personal initiatives
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic to work in a highly competitive, dynamic, stimulating and interacting international scientific environment focusing on basic biological research
According to the training, qualifications and professional experience, the remuneration is EG 13 TVöD-Bund. The benefits correspond to the regulations of the public service. The position is available at the earliest possible date.
