in Quantum Physics and Electrical Engineering Department of Physics RWTH Aachen University
The Department of Physics of the RWTH Aachen University comprises twelve research
institutes, which are at the forefront of research in several areas of Physics - ranging from
high-energy particle physics to statistical physics, from novel materials to quantum technologies.
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (EE) and Information Technology constantly
ranks among the best EE faculties in Germany. It covers a broad spectrum of research
areas with focus on energy, information and communication, medical engineering and
micro-/nanoelectronics. Both institutions benefit also from the tight collaboration with the
Forschungszentrum Jülich as part of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA). An
example of this collaboration is the recently founded JARA Institute for Quantum Information,
which pursues a variety of topics in practical and fundamental quantum information
science. To strengthen their interdisciplinary profile, the two institutions are evaluating the
implementation of novel study tracks for the Master Programmes in Physics and Electrical
Engineering, such as Quantum Technologies or Photonics, which aim at attracting both
physics and electrical-engineering students. To support the evaluation phase of the new
study tracks, the Department of Physics is looking for a coordinator who will have the responsibility
of planning a novel curriculum in Quantum Technologies or Photonics, including
the evaluation of the resulting teaching loads.
A PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or related areas (preferably in a field
close to quantum technologies or photonics)
A strong interest in quantum technologies and teaching
Familiarity with the German academic system
Resourcefulness, good interpersonal-skills and the ability of mediating between the
interests/needs of various groups
Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German is helpful but not compulsory
Your Duties and Responsibilities
The main task of the Coordinator is to develop a novel curriculum for a study track on
Quantum Technologies or Photonics. This will have to take into account the objectives of
the study track, as well as the current curricula at the Bachelor and at the Master level
(both in physics and electrical engineering), and the formal aspects involved into the development
of an interdisciplinary study track.
Another task of the Coordinator is to assess the teaching load associated with the new
study track and to support the coordination of the lecturers (including experts from the
Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology).
The Coordinator will also support the development of the international Master Programme
in Physics in general, e.g. concerning the recruitment and the selection of the international
applicants and the coordination with the graduate`s schools.
Finally, the Coordinator will help developing a bridging-course on Quantum Mechanics for
electrical engineers, and provide guidance and academic support to the Master`s students.

The salary corresponds to level TV-L 13 of the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
