Data Scientist position
starting on 01.01.2019.

We are looking for a person with interest in analysing the risks of climate change and developing an early warning system to predict crop failures, food security or famines in Sub Saharan Africa using statistical, machine learning methods as well as other quantitative methods for data analyzing. Working together with governments, research institutes and private organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa, we aim to translate research findings into user-oriented climate services and policies that enable end users in partner countries to better adapt to climate change.
The position is funded for 22 months. Remuneration is in accordance with German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a full-time position with a weekly working time of 40 hours per week. The position can be filled on a part-time basis.
Analysis of the impacts of climate change on different sectors such as agriculture, economy or health using large data sets.
Improving and applying of climate impact computer simulation models (in particular crop models) with the aim of improving their use for risk assessment, forecasting and impact assessment.
Development and application of statistical methods to assess and forecast agricultural / food security / impacts of climate change
Creation and maintainess of a software repository of statistical crop models for team work, including version control and a data base (SQL or similar) of subnational yield data with restricted access
Publication of articles in peerreviewed journals highlighting results from research projects and presentation of research results at international conferences.
Contribution to the implementation of project results through close collaboration with other researches at PIK as well as the stakeholders involved.
Project management, writing of project reports and applying for funding
We further encourage you to pursue your own research interests, which should have a thematic overlap with the above responsibilities.
You hold a master‘s degree or a PhD in statistics, mathematics, (bio/geo)-informatics, physics, (agricultural) economics, geography or any other relevant field.
You have profound expertise in statistics as well as programing skills in R and/or python.
You have knowledge in other programming languages, GIS, remote sensing satellite data, NetCDF file format and relational databases.
Experience in statistical crop modeling or other statistical models for agricultural or climate impacts is valuable.
Experience in project management and writing proposals for further funding are valuable.
You have knowledge or are interested in risk management and transfer solutions (e. g. insurance solutions), agriculture and climate change in tropical regions.
Work experience in developing countries is valuable and the willingness to travel to these countries is desirable.
You have excellent communication skills and are fluent in spoken and written English. Knowledge of other languages is an advantage.
You are able to work independently, goal-oriented and on your own responsibility.
