Reference Number 2020/163. The Cluster “The Politics of Inequality” invites applications for a doctoral position. The earliest starting date is 1. January, 2021.
The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.
The Cluster of Excellence “The Politics of Inequality” studies the cycle that is formed by the perception of unequally distributed resources, political mobilization resulting from perceived inequality, the policy measures undertaken to deal with them, and their impact on the underlying distribution of resources.
Applications are open for a doctoral position in the project “Administrative Inequality.” to a highly motivated graduate with an outstanding Master's degree or equivalent.
The project examines why foreign nationals with a similar background frequently face varying chances with their requests to obtain visa, work permits, or passports. The Administrative Inequality (AdmIn) project examines the unequal treatment in the domain of visa and naturalization decisions. The project compares decision-making behavior of German consulates across the world and immigration offices of the German states through a collaboration of the Department of Politics and Public Administration and the Department of Law of the University of Konstanz.

Membership in the Cluster “The Politics of Inequality” and the „Graduate School of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (GSBS)
Opportunity to benefit from the Clusters' Methods Hub and from the university's Academic Staff Development unit
MA degree (or equivalent) obtained in any discipline of the social sciences
Interest in political and administrative decision making
Expertise in computational social science and/or game theory
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, German and preferably a third language
Contribute to the project's research on administrative inequality
Develop a research agenda leading to a PhD
Publish in the group's thematic areas
