The TUHH is a modern and dynamic university, striving for international excellence in research and teaching. It provides the ideal conditions for unlocking the knowledge and innovative potential related to today's technological challenges by combining its engineering expertise in the three focal areas of Green Technologies, Life Science Technologies and Aviation and Maritime Systems with cross-cutting research on digitalisation and new materials. As a part of its educational strategy, TUHH is developing new, international degree programmes for tomorrow's engineers, building on its excellent reputation for innovation in teaching and learning for the engineering sciences

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts international cutting-edge research for a changing world: approximately 1,100 employees generate knowledge and innovation toward more resilience and sustainability. The Hereon’s scientific spectrum encompasses high-performance materials, processes and environmentally friendly technologies for mobility and new energy systems. Furthermore, research is conducted on biomaterials for medicine and for increasing quality of life. Through research and consulting, the Hereon addresses the challenges of climate change in a solution-oriented manner and facilitates sustainable management as well as the protection of the coasts and marine environment through comprehensive scientific understanding. From basic understanding to practical applications – the interdisciplinary research centre covers a unique spectrum. As part of an international network and as a member of the Helmholtz Association, the Hereon supports political, economic and societal institutions in shaping the future through the transfer of its expertise.

The TUHH and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon have been collaborating very successfully in the field of materials science for many years. For example, a joint centre for high-performance materials was founded, and both partners cooperate closely in the Collaborative Research Center 986 “Tailored Multiscale Materials Systems” and the HamburgXProject “Center for Integrated Multiscale Materials Systems”. In order to expand this partnership and to complement their expertise in atomic-scale modelling, TUHH and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon are jointly announcing the following professorship:

FULL PROFESSORSHIP (W3)
IN THE AREA OF ATOMIC-SCALE MATERIALS MODELLING

Ref. No: 2109

We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record in investigating current issues in materials science through modelling and computer simulation at the atomic scale. An internationally visible research profile in both materials science and modelling is required.

The candidate's research interests in materials science should be focused on one of the following areas:
  • Atomic-scale mechanisms of the plasticity of metals and alloys
  • Crystal lattice defects and interfaces
  • Mechanics and thermodynamics of nanoscale systems
  • Chemo-mechanically coupled phenomena in crystals
  • Phase transformations and diffusion-mediated microstructure evolution
In modelling and computer simulation, the candidate's research interests should focus on the field of molecular dynamics, ideally in combination with one or more of the following areas:
  • Monte Carlo methods
  • Interatomic potential development via density functional theory
  • Development of advanced simulation methods, for example for atomistic simulation on long time scales
  • Data-driven and high-throughput methods

The duties of the professorship include participation in teaching in the field of materials science in its entire breadth, both in the bachelor's and master's program and in both German and English. Applicants for whom German is not their native language are expected to be willing to learn German. Ideal candidates should have strong skills in modern leadership (including also aspects of gender equality and diversity). The professorship will be based at the Institute of Materials Physics and Technology of TUHH and at the same time in charge of the Department of Atomistic Simulations of the Institute of Material Systems Modeling at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon.

The deadline for applications is February 03, 2022.

The successful applicants will be appointed professors at the TUHH. Subsequently, they will be assigned to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon to the extent of 50% (Full Professor) or 49% (Junior Professor).

TUHH and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon are equal opportunity employers and particularly welcome and encourage applications from women. Women are underrepresented among professors at the TUHH. They will therefore be given preferential consideration in the case of equivalent qualifications.

Applications by disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given preference.

Applications can be submitted in German or English. Please upload your application (including CV, Ref. no., a list of publications, relevant certificates, brief overview of research activities and teaching experience) using the QR-Code on the right side or the link. Please note that the TUHH will forward your application documents to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon for consideration.

For questions, please contact the Vice President Research at TUHH, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Irina Smirnova, via email berufungen@tuhh.de.

Please note that the specification of professors' responsibilities is subject to review at regular intervals in accordance with Section 12 (7) of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG). For the W3 position, hiring requirements according to Section 15 HmbHG apply. For the W1 professorship, Section 18 HmbHG applies.
