The Berlin Institute of Health is a biomedical research institution focusing on translational research and precision medicine. BIH uses a systems medicine approach to
develop innovative options for prediction, prevention and advanced therapies for progressive diseases in order to improve patients’ health and quality of life.The Charité is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe representing a single medical faculty that serves both Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and
Freie Universität Berlin. Clinical care, research and teaching is delivered by physicians and researchers of the highest international standard. The Charité
extends over four campuses, and has close to 100 different Departments and Institutes, which form a total of 17 different CharitéCenters. The MDC is a top-ranking international biomedical research center in Berlin. It is named after one of the founders of modern genetics and molecular biology. The MDC is
devoted to interdisciplinary biomedical research aiming to uncover fundamental molecular mechanisms governing cellular, organ and organismal homeostasis in health as well as
disease-overarching pathomechanisms. The ultimate goal is a speedy translation of research findings into clinical applications to improve prevention, early diagnosis, interception and treatment of disease.
To strengthen translational research in the field of Vascular Biomedicine in Berlin, the BIH, Charité and the MDC jointly invite applications for the following position commencing as soon as possible:
Full Professorship in Translational Vascular Biomedicine

Charité, MDC and BIH seek to fill this position with an outstanding physician scientist with excellent track record in vascular biomedicine focused on (pathophysiological)
mechanisms in terminal vascular beds that underlie clinically relevant diseases. The independent professorship will be part of the BIH research focus “Vascular Biomedicine”
which seeks to prevent and revert morbidity and progressive end organ damage in vascular diseases by unravelling, conceptualizing and treating local and systemic causes and clinical
manifestation of vascular dysfunction using an interdisciplinary translational approach.
Besides scientific excellence demonstrating impact on the current understanding of fundamental mechanisms in vascular biology, the successful candidate is expected to present a strong translational mindset and corresponding research agenda. An excellent publication record demonstrating the quality of the research and a strong funding record are expected, as well as experience in the initiation of third-party funded, interdisciplinary national and international research projects. The successful candidate will be engaged in limited teaching activities, supervise Master and Doctoral candidates, and participate in academic self-organization.
The position will be integrated in a highly collaborative and vibrant scientific environment. The successful candidate will benefit from access to world-class technology platforms, pioneering in single cell technology, genomics, metabolomics and proteomics as well as advanced stem cell, organoid and humanized disease model systems. The Charité, MDC and BIH provide excellent infrastructure available to the candidate, including advanced imaging facilities, drug-screening platforms, technology transfer opportunities and clinical research units offering access to clinical cohorts and biomaterial for translational research.
The tenured appointment with a salary according to the W3 level comes with a competitive tenure-package for an independent research group which will be negotiated during the recruitment and additional allowances may be granted. Thereafter, the package will be subject to regular performance reviews every five years.
Qualifications: as per § 100 Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG) junior professorship or postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation), or equivalent scientific achievement and teaching experience. Completed university degree as well as doctorate (Ph.D and/or M.D.) in medicine or natural sciences with significant post-doctoral experience.
