A unique opportunity to establish your independent

Group leader position

induced pluripotent stem cells and brain malignancies

(Ref-No. 90/2017)

Description:
The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) together with the Hans-Werner Hector Foundation (Hector Stiftung) have recently established the Hector Institute for Translational Brain Research (HITBR). This institute exploits human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology with the goal to identify new targets through the study of neural cells and tissues (organoids) in brain disorders with focus on psychiatric diseases and brain malignancies.

We are currently seeking an outstanding researcher as head of an independent junior research group (equivalent to an appointment at the assistant professor level). The successful candidate should have international research experience and excellent scientific track record in iPSC technology and its application.

The candidate should provide an innovative research program focusing on fundamental and/or translational aspects of brain malignancies such as cancer initiation, growth control of neural tissue, the cellular origin of brain cancer or therapeutic intervention using human iPSC-based models. Inclusion of state-of-the-art techniques such as brain organoids or CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing is encouraged.

Location:
The group will be hosted at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg and tightly interact with the HITBR groups located at the CIMH in Mannheim. The DKFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German research centers and with approximately 2,900 employees the largest biomedical research institute in Germany as well as one of Europe’s leading cancer research centers. Our mission is to unravel the causes and mechanisms underlying cancer development and progression and, based on innovative research, develop novel strategies for the diagnosis, early detection, prevention and treatment of cancer.

To efficiently translate novel findings from basic science into the clinic, the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) was established by the DKFZ, Heidelberg University Hospital and German Cancer Aid. Located on the biomedical campus in Heidelberg, the DKFZ is embedded in a highly attractive scientific environment offering a broad spectrum of opportunities for collaborations. Moreover, we provide excellent research conditions, an international and collegial research environment and access to state-of-the-art core facilities.

Application:
Eligible applicants are scientists (PhD, MD or MD-PhD degree) with more than 2 and less than 6 years of postdoctoral experience at the time of application (which can be extended for family-related matters / nursing of family members or residency training periods).

The ideal candidate is expected to pursue highly innovative research projects at the frontiers of human induced pluripotent stem cells and brain cancer and should be able to successfully raise extramural funding.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, summary of past research and future plans (max. 5 pages) and names and addresses of two to three references using our online application portal (www.dkfz.de). Applications will be preselected and short listed candidates will be invited to the DKFZ to present and discuss
their research and future plans.
