Located 36 miles east of Atlanta on Emory’s original campus in Oxford, Georgia (USA), Oxford College invites applications for a Visiting Halle Foundation Scholar in German Studies to begin August 2018. Teaching responsibilities include a two/three course load in the fall/spring as well as the organization and supervision of a short-term travel course to Germany following the completion of the spring semester. Teaching responsibilities allow room for the visiting scholar to engage with students and faculty at Oxford and Atlanta through public lectures and other outreach events and to pursue research opportunities within Emory University. The successful candidate will offer electives in German Studies in the candidate’s area of expertise to complement existing first- and second-year German language courses in the German Studies Program at Oxford College. Most of these courses will be offered in English with the possibility of an upper-level content course taught in German for advanced students. Courses should be in the candidate’s area of specialization and may include any academic interests connecting to one of Oxford’s existing curricular strengths such as Film and Theater Studies, Comparative Literature, Jewish Studies, and Environmental Humanities; the scholar might also focus on issues of contemporary sociopolitical significance for both Germany and the US such as Immigration Studies and the refugee crisis.
Preferred Qualifications: A PhD in hand by August 2018 in German Studies or related field; superior-level proficiency in German and English; documented excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; a strong commitment to teaching excellence; and an active research agenda (areas of sub-specialization within German Studies are open).
Additional Job Details: Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, one letter of recommendation, and evidence of teaching effectiveness (may include student evaluations of teaching or a statement of teaching philosophy by applicant). Complete applications with cover letters, submitted by January 10, 2018 will receive full consideration.
