Head (f/m/d) of the department Magnesium Materials and Processing
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and the Leuphana University of Lüneburg jointly invite applications for the position of
HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT MAGNESIUM MATERIALS AND PROCESSING
at the "Magnesium Innovation Center – MagIC" of the Institute of Materials Research. Place of employment is Geesthacht / Germany.
The position is linked to a professorship
MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY, IN PARTICULAR OF MAGNESIUM MATERIALS
at Leuphana University Lüneburg according to the Jülich Model (academic leave is given) with a teaching engagement of two
contact hours (2 Lehr veranstaltungsstunden) per week per semester.
The research of the department focuses on following topics and activities:
Use of ICME concepts for the development of alloys and processes of advanced magnesium materials including Mg-nanocomposites
for functional and structural applications and as metallic biomaterials
Development of tailor-made processes for production, functionalization and optimization of metallic lightweight structures or
metallic biomaterials (casting and / or wrought technologies)
Extrusion and forging
Functionalization of surfaces
Multi-scale process microstructure property relationship studies and their use for efficient alloy and process development
Technology transfer – Implementation of developed materials, processes and ICME concepts in technologies and products,
also in cooperation with industry
For the position profound experience with and in-depth knowledge – proven by scholarly and scientifi c achievements (see formal
requirements below) – of one or more of the following material science and ICME related areas are required:
Material science / physical fundamentals of modern metallic lightweight materials
Alloy development of lightweight materials, especially magnesium alloys
Thermomechanical treatment of metallic materials
Functionalization of surfaces
Solidification and phase formation and its simulation
Integrated Computational Materials Engineering
Digitization of process chains as a tool of control and for "machine learning"
You have experience in human resources management and coordinate interdisciplinary teams with research programs. You communicate
clearly and convincingly and can solve confl icts constructively. You are personally resilient and have a dedicated and goal-oriented
working style. The willingness to contribute and to advance education in the fi eld of science management, e.g. in the context of the
Helmholtz Academy of Management, and to apply the acquired knowledge in practice is a prerequisite.
You publish in outstanding quality in nationally and internationally recognized journals; you are able to work in a team, have established
networks within academic and professional communities and have very good command of the English language. If you do not yet have
a sufficient knowledge of German, we expect you to be willing to acquire a sufficient knowledge of the German language within an
appropriate period of time. You have developed research perspectives and initiate projects that are unique in their fi eld. You promote
a professional and constructive discourse with leading international universities, research institutions and industrial partners. It is
expected that you are as familiar with the acquisition and support of research projects as you are with project research with industry. An
active support in research and teaching of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, especially in the topic "material technology" is expected.
In accordance with Article 25 (1) of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz, i.e. relevant state law)
formal requirements for appointment of the professorship (W2/3) and therefore for the position include:
A completed university degree;
the special ability to engage in independent scholarly work, deepened independent scientifi c work, which is usually proven by
having received an above average grade for your doctoral degree or PhD in a relevant fi eld;
additional scholarly and scientifi c achievements, usually achieved in the course of being a junior professorship (i.e. assistant
professor) or postdoctoral qualifi cation (habilitation), or other achievements being recognized as equivalent to a habilitation; and
a pedagogical-didactic aptitude as demonstrated through experience and the use of innovative teaching methods.
