Head of Communications
Global Public Policy Institute
The Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) is an independent, non-profit think tank and consultancy focused on global politics and based in Berlin.
Starting between July 1 and August 1, we seek a
Head of Communications
to help us produce and roll out top-quality digital and analog products from our research, consulting, and debate activities on global politics.
At GPPi, communication is everyone’s job. Your job is to make sure your colleagues get editing, typesetting, design, web-publishing, and social media support to get their products out. Your job is to maintain and develop our brand throughout our websites, publications, newsletters, and social media channels. You are our communications point-person: you are responsible for getting things done, and you are the one to whom we look for crazy new ideas. You orchestrate the work of two part-time colleagues and a network of freelancers, but depending on your profile, you will also do your share of the day-to-day work of editing or typesetting publications, website development and maintenance, or social media engagement.
You are passionate about the global issues we work on and about making bold, credible, and accessible contributions to these debates, whether in the form of an op-ed, an academic journal article, or an evaluation report. You are broadly familiar with the issues, but instead of wanting to spend your time doing research interviews in South Sudan, you would much rather help your wonky colleagues express their analysis in such a way that their findings and suggestions grab the attention and imagination of busy decision-makers and the broader public. Sometimes the BBC calls, or you are editing an op-ed for the Financial Times. Most of the time you run a conveyor belt of anything from 800-word commentaries to 150-page studies to be copy-edited, proofread, typeset, and published, making sure that we meet our deadlines with products that everyone else considers perfect (since you are the only one to discover that annoying typo).
You are obsessed with detail, linguistic and aesthetic, but you are also a big-picture person who cherishes the opportunities to think ahead. You are entrepreneurial in taking charge and finding nimble solutions to drive things forward. You may not be a native speaker of English, but it is hard to tell since you write excellent copy and are a good judge of how well others write or edit texts. You have got a sense of design, analog or digital, so you will be comfortable directing freelance designers in developing design products or brands. You are hands-on with technology, so website content management systems are not a challenge to use. Ideally, you have got sufficient understanding of responsive design to effectively manage the frontend and backend developers working on our websites (gppi.net as well as ggfutures.net, peacelab2016.de or transatlanticdigitaldebates.net). You understand website and social media analytics, and you follow new technology trends. You are comfortable working with German printing companies and with copy-editors working on texts in English, German, and the occasional other language.
On some of these things, you are expert enough to just do it when outsourcing makes no sense (using Microsoft Office to create professional Word/PowerPoint templates; Adobe Creative Suite for design; HTML5/CSS/Bootstrap, Google Analytics etc. for websites currently based on TYPO3). On others, you are happy to maintain an oversight role. In your application, you will let us know what your mix would be.
This is an ambitious job description, no question. But we want someone who is eager to grow with the job, even if he or she has not worked on all of its aspects before.
Starting date: between July 1 and August 1, 2017. Please indicate availability.
GPPi offers a dynamic work environment in the center of Germany’s capital and a young, international team working in a global network. Our working language is English but some level of German would be useful for the job.
If you are a non-EU citizen, please clearly indicate whether you already have a valid EU work visa.
GPPi is an equal opportunity employer.
To apply, please send your CV and a letter of interest to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please do not submit paper applications or inquire about your application over the phone. For inquiries about the position, please contact Oliver Read at email@example.com.
Review of applications will start May 8, 2017 and continue until the position is filled.
