The Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO, www.synmikro.com) and the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center TRR 174 at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, seek to fill as soon as possible, but no later than summer 2020, a full-time position as an
Independent Junior Group Leader
in Bacterial Cell Biology
The appointment will be for 4 years, with the option of a 2-year extension after successful evaluation. The position will come with an attractive start-up package, including funding for PhD students, an annual budget and access to the state-of-the-art core facilities of SYNMIKRO. SYNMIKRO is a Research Center of Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology. It comprises 40 different research groups that investigate all levels of cellular organization in microbes. As one of the largest microbiological research centers in Europe, SYNMIKRO offers an international research environment and extensive facility infrastructure. Together with its partners, SYNMIKRO has recently established the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center TRR 174 (www.TRR174.org). This consortium uses a broad interdisciplinary approach to investigate molecular mechanisms that underlie the "spatio-temporal dynamics of bacterial cells".
We are looking for outstanding and highly motivated individuals to further strengthen our expertise in bacterial cell biology within TRR 174. Applicants must hold a PhD degree and have an outstanding scientific track record, as reflected by high-profile publications in respected international academic journals and competitive funding or fellowships. Moreover, they must have substantial international research experience related to the focal research areas of TRR 174. These include bacterial cell division, growth & morphogenesis, chromosome organization & segregation, the positioning of motility structures, and the dynamics of (membrane) protein complex assembly. Candidates are expected to develop an independent and internationally visible research program and participate actively in the microbiological research initiatives at Philipps-Universität Marburg. Moreover, they are expected to apply for additional third-party funding, e.g. within the DFG Emmy-Noether Fellowship or ERC Starting Grant programs.
The successful candidate will gain from the in-depth microbiological expertise and the comprehensive facility infrastructure in Marburg. We offer a stimulating and interactive environment and provide ample opportunity for collaborations within the microbiological research centers on site. Moreover, we will provide mentoring as well as support in the preparation of grant proposals and management training.
Philipps-Universität Marburg aims to increase the proportion of female research group leaders and, therefore, strongly encourages women to apply. We are a certified, family-friendly and international university. Applicants with children, from outside Germany and dual career couples are most welcome. Disabled candidates will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants. Application and interview costs cannot be refunded.
Applications with supporting documents (cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, list of publications and teaching experience, certificates/diplomas) as well as a research statement including collaboration plans, should be sent by email as a single PDF-file to firstname.lastname@example.org, indicating code number ZE-0066-synmikro-wmz-2019, by August 23, 2019.
