The Institute of Geosciences of the Faculty of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and
Geoscience at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (JGU) invites
applications for a tenure track appointment at the level of
Junior Professor (m/f)
(Salary class W1 with tenure track to a W2 position; LBesG)
starting in 2019. Candidates with a broad training in geosciences and a strong
expertise in the application of biomineralization, metabolic biological processes
and crystallography for the reconstruction of past climate variability based on
marine and/or terrestrial biogenic minerals are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Institute of Geosciences is equipped with modern analytical, experimental,
computational and teaching facilities and has a dynamic, international research
team. This position is part of a cluster hire that will strengthen the institute's two
main research directions in "Paleoclimatology" and "Dynamics of the Solid Earth".
Further faculty searches in Sedimentary Geochemistry, Metamorphic Processes
and Tectonics/Structural Geology have recently been made.
We seek a creative individual, who is willing to collaborate across discipline
boundaries and interact with faculty and students. The successful candidate
will complement our existing research strengths, e.g., speleothem research,
sclerochronology, lake sediments and solid Earth geoscience. In addition, we
expect the candidate to collaborate with other research institutions on the JGU
Campus, such as the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. The ideal candidate
shows a strong promise to become a leader in the research field, attract external
research funding, and develop a high-quality teaching and research supervision
program. In teaching, the broad fields of crystallography, mineralogy and
biomineralization at the BSc and MSc level are to be covered. Part of the
teaching can be done in English, but we expect a willingness to learn German in
a reasonable amount of time. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected
to participate in service roles within the institute.
Applicants must meet the general requirements according to public services law
and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate (§§ 54, 55 Hochschulgesetz
- Higher Education Act).
The initial contract will run for three years and will be extended for another three
years contingent upon a successful intermediate evaluation. Accordingly, after a
final successful evaluation as junior professor after six years and provided that
the general requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will qualify for appointment
to a tenured full professorship (W2).
