KU Leuven’s role in this project is to determine conditions in which these so-called Level 3 automated driving systems
(SAE, 2014) can be granted permission to operate fully automatically, or when hand-over to the driver is mandatory. In
addition, traffic control strategies will be developed and tested that exploit the V2I communication to enhance integration
of AV’s in mixed traffic conditions, safety, and throughput in the critical bottleneck sections of the test site. Before,
during, and after the field trials, detailed traffic, vehicle, and telecommunication data will be collected, allowing
analyses and assessment of AV-applications in real-life mixed-traffic conditions in a wide variety of traffic densities.
KU Leuven is looking for a junior researcher/developer with a (traffic) engineering profile, programming skills, and experience
with microscopic traffic simulation, traffic operations data analysis, traffic operations control, AV operations analysis. The
role of the researcher is to define the data collection strategy ,and to process. and analyze the traffic data in order to infer
detailed behavioural models that can be used in traffic simulations. On the test site, the situation ex-ante needs to be monitored
(longitudinal and lane changing behaviour) as well as during the trials to monitor how the automated vehicles behave in real traffic,
and how other drivers react to the AV's dynamics. Together with your colleague specialized in traffic simulation, you then extrapolate
the impacts of AV's in traffic streams to conditions that were not observed during the trial: other test sites, other traffic conditions,
higher penetration levels of the technology,...
As the project involves many partners and is very innovative, close co-operation with other expertises will be required, as well as
flexibility in modifying tasks etc whenever this is required for other partners, unforeseen circumstances or constraints. Some maturity
and responsibility in project management skills are therefore useful!
The candidate may use the results of this research to continue his work towards a PhD degree.
