The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is a scientific institution that
investigates the attentional, cognitive, and affective mechanisms of aesthetic perception and evaluation.
The Institute currently has an opening for a
Linux Administrator/Data Engineer (m/f/d)
in the Neuroscience Department.
The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics is seeking a qualified person to work closely with our scientists to
implement (and develop) software for storage and data analysis as part of an international Open Science collaboration
involving partners in Europe, the USA, and China. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of an
Open Science model for large-scale collaborations.
Your responsibilities will include:
System administration and data engineering;
Design, installation, and operation of Linux application servers, including XNAT, Apache Tomcat, postgres
database, Docker Swarm, file systems/storage, and security;
Managing XNAT with applications, including user registration and data model configuration;
First- and second-level technical support for the HPC Cluster and ancillary applications;
Overseeing data uploads integration from worldwide collaborating sites;
Assisting scientific programmers with data access and data processing using Python and XNAT REST API;
Developing and maintaining automated scientific processing pipelines, including utilization of HPC cluster
resources, and converting data for open data sharing (BIDS);
Support of neuroscience researchers;
Interface with IT department and external providers.
Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, and/or relevant professional experience
in data management/programming;
Knowledge of Linux administration, networking, virtual servers (VMware), and user support;
Experience in scripting languages, e.g., Batch Scripting, Python, and MatLab, and/or work experience with GPUs
in the HPC environment (CUDA Toolkit) are desirable;
Knowledge of High-Performance Computing cluster environment (or willingness to acquire it);
Certificates or training in Linux environment are a plus;
Knowledge of XNAT environment or experience with databases, e.g., SQL, is a plus;
Very good command of English, both written and spoken;
Good command of German is a plus;
Flexible, proactive, independent, responsible, and solution-oriented thinking and service-oriented work ethic;
Team player with good communication skills and a friendly and open-minded attitude.

Salaries are determined following the salary scale of the German TVÖD Bund*, dependent on qualifications and
experience; in addition, substantial social benefits are provided, in accordance with German civil service legislation.
