The Max Planck Institute for Human Development is dedicated to the study of human development and education. Researchers of various disciplines - including psychology,
education, sociology and medicine, as well as history, economics, computer science and mathematics - work together on interdisciplinary projects at the Berlin Institute.
The research questions they examine include how people make effective decisions even under time pressure and information overload, how the interaction between behaviour
and brain function changes over the lifespan, as well as how human emotions change in a historical context and how they have affected the course of history itself.
The Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Center for Humans and Machines (Director: Assoc. Prof. (MIT) Iyad Rahwan, Ph.D.), is seeking applications for a
Linux Systems Administrator / Research- Support Engineer
(up to EG 12 TVöD; 39 hours/Week)
The Center for Humans and Machines is a unique and vibrant collective of interdisciplinary scientists with a rich portfolio of globally-recognized projects that attempt
to redefine human-machine relationships. The ideal candidate will enjoy working on a wide range of tasks and projects that require creative solutions.
The position is available for two years with the possibility of extension. It is available from November 1, 2019 or later.
Managing Linux servers and high performance computers, including GPU machines; creation and maintenance of code-sharing infrastructure (e.g. via Github or similar tools);
set-up and maintenance of data storage and backup solutions for research data (on local or cloud storage), managing online services (e.g. AWS, GoDaddy); supporting researchers
in the set-up and maintenance of data collection solutions, such as collection of Twitter posts from public APIs, or scraping data from Web pages; coordinating with colleagues
in central IT services at the MPIB in order to streamline services and support researchers; creation and maintenance of internal knowledge management resources (e.g. wikis)
for sharing knowledge among researchers; liaison with the computing services of the Max-Planck Society (e.g. MPCDF and GWDG) and other providers.
A university degree in computer science or a related field; at least 5 years of experience maintaining a variety of IT services; strong working knowledge of Linux
(macOS is a bonus); established DevOps mindset when for configuring and maintaining server and service infrastructures, including adding security patches, and access
auditing; some familiarity and strong interest in scalable file systems, experience managing access to cloud computing services; excellent command of the English language;
strong service-orientation, and a desire to find creative solutions to requirements and problems facing researchers; the ability to work collaboratively and cordially with
colleagues, including coordinating with other IT service departments at the institute.
