The ’Munich Center for the Economics of Aging’ (MEA) at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy offers a full-time position for an experienced

Head of Survey Operations

to lead the Operations Department of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The position is limited to a two year contract, with the possibility of extension given funding.

The responsibilities would consist of multiple tasks related to the leadership of the Operations team:

  • Several years of experience with being a team leader:
    • Experience in giving guidance to team members on issues of a large-scale survey implementation, ideally with a focus on longitudinal surveys
    • Ability to set goals, provide feedback, and oversee the work of the team members
    • Good knowledge of the entire HR pipeline, ideally within the context of a scientific organization

  • Overseeing of all matters related to the proper implementation of the SHARE survey for the upcoming waves
    • Provide strategic input to planning of a survey wave to PI and international coordinator
    • Devise and monitor the implementation of the SHARE project schedule with the study PI, all team members at MEA, external collaborators and software developers
    • Manage the internal team and be the liaison to the team of external software developers
    • Coordinate the international fieldwork operations across the 28 countries participating in SHARE
    • Prepare, plan and facilitate large project meeting and software trainings
  • Provide input to scientific grant applications, reporting to funding bodies (EU COM, US NIA, German ministry of Science and Research, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG, etc.)
  • Pursue own research ideas and produce peer reviewed papers, either on substantive or methodological topics

The ideal candidate would bring the following qualifications:
  • University degree in social sciences, economics, public health, epidemiology, demography, statistics, or a related field (a PhD will be considered an advantage)
  • Extensive experience with team leadership and managing project teams in a social science enterprise or university context
  • Extensive experience with scientific project management, ideally within an academic context
  • Good knowledge of survey methodology and experience with the implementation of survey fieldwork
  • Extensive knowledge of quantitative data analysis and statistical software (Stata, SPSS, etc.) and MS Office applications
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English, good skills in additional languages used in SHARE will be considered a plus
  • Track record of self-organized & highly proactive working style
  • Team player mentality with proven management experience
  • Interest in own research on substantive or methodological topics (willingness to pursue a PhD for pre-doc applicants)

Compensation will be in accordance with German TVöD and the relevant experience of the candidate.
