The Institute for Geoinformatics (ifgi) at the University of Münster, Germany, invites applications to fill the post of a

Junior Professorship (Juniorprofessur)

(salary level W1, 100%)
in the field of remote sensing and image processing
This fixed-term position will begin at the earliest possible date. The initial contract will run for three years and will be extended for another three years after a successful interim evaluation.
Who are we looking for?
Applicants should have an outstanding PhD in remote sensing, geoinformatics or a related discipline and should have a track record of additional research in at least one innovative area related to remote sensing and image processing. Of particular interest are the following areas of research:
  • Applied remote sensing and image processing
  • Machine learning for image classification
  • Spatial data infrastructures for large-scale imagery
  • Time series analysis on remotely sensed images
  • Integration of sensors and sensor data
Applicants with a research focus in an area of remote sensing and image processing other than the ones listed above are also very welcome to apply, as long as the focus complements existing research areas already present at the University of Münster, in particular within the Faculty of Geosciences and the ifgi.
Applicants will be required to contribute to teaching (i.e. courses related to geoinformatics that are part of several degree programs in the faculty). The teaching load associated with the advertised post is four hours per week during the teaching terms (five hours after a successful mid-term evaluation). Courses are taught in English or in German. In addition, the successful applicant will supervise undergraduate and graduate students (including PhD students), and contribute to the self-administration of the Institute and the faculty. Finally, the successful applicant is expected to create their own research agenda and research group.
The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of women academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities. We also welcome applications from candidates with severe disabilities. Disabled candidates with equivalent qualifi cations will be preferentially considered.
What are we offering?
The Institute for Geoinformatics is the first and largest of its kind in Germany. Research and teaching cover a broad range of topics in geoinformatics. Core research areas at ifgi currently include: analysis and modelling of spatiotemporal processes, interaction with spatiotemporal information, spatial cognition, geodata infrastructures, geosimulation, UAVs, geotechnologies in education and smart cities. ifgi offers a dynamic, research-intensive and international environment with many opportunities for collaboration throughout the Institute, the Faculty and the University. It is also nationally and internationally well connected. Collaboration across groups and disciplines is explicitly encouraged and practiced throughout the entire Institute. In addition, the city of Münster is not only one of the most liveable cities in Germany, but it also hosts several small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as larger companies working in areas closely related to remote sensing and image processing.
How to apply?
Please submit your application with the usual documents (including a research and a teaching plan) as a single PDF file via email by 31 March 2018 to the following address:
