PhD position in few-cycle laser development for novel accelerators
DESY is one of the world's leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2,400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.
Ultrafast lasers are key to a large variety of research efforts at DESY including ultrafast measurements, electron beam control, and laser-based particle acceleration. The exploration of laser-based electron acceleration employing novel laser technologies is the focus of new research activities at DESY. Within these efforts, new laser systems are being developed in order to reach the demands set by kHz-class accelerators. A particularly interesting and potentially disruptive technology is currently rapidly spreading across the ultrafast laser community: laser pulse post-compression via multi-pass spectral broadening. The technique enables the use of readily available picosecond lasers to generate ultrashort pulses with a duration of only a few optical cycles. Within this project, we will exploit the potential of this technology for next generation electron accelerators. We are seeking a self-driven, highly motivated PhD student for this challenging project shared between the DESY accelerator division and the photon science division.
Development of a novel high-power few-cycle laser source employing extreme-scale post-compression
Advance laser post-compression technology to large compression factors, high throughput and few-cycle pulse durations
Contribute to first electron acceleration experiments using TW-class few-cycle pulses
Master's degree in experimental physics, electrical engineering or equivalent degree
Background in photonics / nonlinear optics / lasers
Experience in hands-on laboratory work
Interest in the field of ultrafast lasers and their applications
Team working ability and very good knowledge of English
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties.
