At the research department "Complexity Science" the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research is offering
1 PhD Position (m/f/d)
in mathematics, physics, economics, computer science, or a related field, working on the global economic impacts of climate change, starting on 01/09/2019.

The successful candidate will be part of the EU-funded H2020 project "REmote Climate Effects and their Impact on European sustainability, Policy and Trade" (RECEIPT) and will work on the remote economic impacts via supply and trade chains from extreme weather onto Europe. The position is funded for 3 years. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 26 per week.
The RECEIPT project:
In an interconnected world, Europe‘s economy will be increasingly affected by climate change impacts that occur beyond its border. The RECEIPT project aims to develop and implement a novel stakeholder-driven storytelling concept that maps representative connections between European socio-economic activities and remote climatic hazards. It provides mapping of global hotspots of remote areas with climate features relevant for Europe as well as sectoral storylines describing the impacts of remote climate change on food security, the financial sector, international development, commodities and European coastal infrastructure. These will be assessed along each of the selected storylines under different future climatic conditions, including high-end climate scenarios.
The successful candidate will be part of work package WP6 of the RECEIPT project, which investigates remote economic impacts from extreme weather onto Europe and how to adapt to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience.
Development and implementation of a long-term timescale to represent the changing economic baseline in the loss-propagation model framework "Acclimate"
Development and implementation of a model for mid-term economic investment of agents on a network
Numerical simulation and analysis of the models under different climatic and economic scenarios
Development of adaptation strategies for coping with adverse impacts
Publication of research results in scientific journals and presentation of research results internally and at relevant international conferences
Interaction with project and other cooperation partners
Master‘s degree in mathematics, physics, economics, computer science, or a related field
Good programming skills (C/C++ and Python preferred)
Experience in numerical modeling and analyses (preferred)
High level of competence in oral and written English (preferred)
Ability for teamwork and work in a multi-disciplinary environment
