PhD position in Wind Turbine Remaining Life Prediction
The purpose of the project is to tackle specific challenges in lifetime assessment of wind turbine structures such as blades or support structures and mechanical components such as the main bearing or pitch bearing, based on measured operating conditions, visual inspections and load simulations. Research will focus on developing mathematical models for evaluating the probability of failure of specific wind turbine components based on quantifying dynamic loading on the component and the probability of crossing specified limit states. Wind farm control algorithms such as selective de-rating/up-rating of wind turbines will be evaluated so as to maintain a target reliability of specific components while delivering the required energy to the grid. The performance of large offshore wind turbines of 12 MW capacities or higher will also be simulated. The integrity of the component in question will be diagnosed using mathematical models, whose outputs will allow decision making on maintenance and life extension.
The PhD candidate will also have the opportunity for a funded external short term stay at another reputed university to further his/her research work and to network amongst other researchers in the field.
A Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical engineering or allied discipline
A sound understanding of computational mechanics and structural mechanics is essential.
An understanding of reliability and loads computation on wind turbines will be an added advantage
Good computer programming skills in at least one major language or script is required
Fluency in communicating, reading and writing English is essential

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
