PhD position in applied mathematics

There is a vacancy for a PhD position in applied mathematics at the Department of Mathematics. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years with compulsory work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is subject to the ACTOM project.

About the project/work tasks:
The ACTOM project is funded through ACT, an ERA NET Cofund collaboration between 11 countries (http://www.act-ccs.eu). The project is coordinated by the Department of Mathematics, with partners from the UK, USA, Netherland and Norway. In ACTOM we will develop tools for designing marine monitoring programs for subsea geological storage of CO2 projects. The tools should take into account legal constraints, industrial needs and societal concerns. The PhD candidate will take part in developing models to simulate seeps of CO2 to marine waters, and use these models to develop methods to estimate uncertainties and implement tools to design monitoring programs.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a master‘s degree or the equivalent in applied mathematics, statistics, engineering, or oceanography. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 1 October 2019. It is a condition of employment that the master‘s degree has been awarded.
  • Solid background in mathematical topics, such as linear algebra, numerical methods and differential equations is a requirement.
  • Programming experience, in e.g. Python, R or Matlab, is a requirement.
  • Experience in using tools for numerical simulations of fluid flows is an advantage.
  • Background in statistics, data analysis, probability and risk analysis is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

About the PhD position:
The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 per cent of the time each year comprises required duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training: As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within two months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
