The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne invites applications for

a PhD Position in Bioinformatic Analysis of Ageing (job code 29/2018)

We seek a talented, dynamic, highly motivated young scientist to join our department for Biological Mechanisms of Ageing, (http://www.age.mpg.de/science/research-labs/partridge) headed by Director Prof. Linda Partridge. The project will be done in close collaboration with Prof. Andreas Beyer (http://cecad.uni-koeln.de/Prof-Dr-Andreas-Beyer.361.0.html) from the Cologne Cluster of Excellence CECAD at the University of Cologne across the street. We are interested in applicants with a background in high-throughput data analysis.
The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and collaborative team in an excellent scientific environment. The department investigates mechanisms of ageing and ageing-associated diseases, using the fruit fly Drosophila and the mouse as experimental model organisms. Our work combines in vivo phenotyping with high-throughput techniques (proteomics, metabolomics, RNA-Seq, Bisulfite-Seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq), molecular biology, biochemistry and highresolution imaging to study how pharmacological, dietary and genetic interventions extend health and lifespan in mice.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold a master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field. The applicant should have strong written and oral communication skills. The working language is English; knowledge of the German language is not required. Experience in one of the following methodologies: epigenetics, transcriptomics, highthroughput data analysis, mathematical modelling and network generation is an advantage; basic or advanced programming skills are required.
Research environment
The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing was founded in 2008 for the purpose of understanding fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing. It is part of a broad network of research institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area dedicated to research on ageing and age-related disease, including the CECAD, constituting a vibrant and collaborative environment for research. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and excellent core facilities, to which the successful candidate would have access, the institute provides outstanding research opportunities for its scientists. At the moment, we host employees from 34 different nations.
Applications should include:
  • a cover letter that includes answers to the following questions:
    (1) Why are you interested in this position?
    (2) How is your training relevant to research into the biology of ageing?
    (3) What are your plans for a future career?
  • a Curriculum Vitae including your scientific interests, publications and scientific achievements
  • certificates and transcripts of the degrees you obtained already
  • contact information for 2-3 references
and should be uploaded as one single pdf-file using our application website https://www.age.mpg.de/career-education/open-positions/ (quoting job code: 29/2018) until 8th November 2018
We offer a three-year contract according to the funding guidelines for young researchers of the Max Planck Society. The Max Planck Society is committed to employ more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and especially encourages them to apply. The position is available from the earliest time point.
