PhD / PostDoc (f/m/d) for the project "Experimental and numerical simulation on the fluid mechanics of ice crystal icing"
Technische Universität Braunschweig
Arbeiten an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig
The TU Braunschweig as an excellent location for aviation research.
TU Braunschweig was successful with two applications in the German Excellence. The two research projects "QuantumFrontiers" and "SE²A" are funded from 2019 for seven years. The Excellence Strategy promotes cutting-edge research at German universities and is intended to strengthen Germany as an internationally competitive science hot-spot. The excellence commission selected the excellence cluster "SE²A - Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation" and "QuantumFrontiers" of the Technical University of Braunschweig from 88 grant applications.
The cluster of excellence SE²A is an interdisciplinary research project with the aim of researching technologies for the sustainable and environmentally sound development of aviation. In the cluster, scientists from aviation, electrical engineering, energy, chemistry and design work on reducing emissions, reducing noise pollution, the recyclability of air transport systems and the further development of air traffic management. Next to the TU Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), the Braunschweig University of Art and Design (HBK) and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) are all involved based on cooperation agreements.
The Institute of Fluid Mechanics at the Technische Universität Braunschweig is currently inviting applications for the position of a
PhD / PostDoc (full time)
on "Experimental and numerical simulation on the fluid mechanics of ice crystal icing"
in collaboration with many European partners from aero-engine industry and academia
(from September 1, 2019 - temporary position for two years)
The subject of icing is an important aspect of the certification of commercial aircraft. One possible icing scenario is based on small ice crystals, which can be found in the higher atmosphere. On cold surface, they would bounce off, however in warm zones, such as in engine compressors and in pitot probes, the ice crystal become sticky and may accrete. In order to predict this process with numerical simulations, on the one hand numerous experimental experiments are necessary. On the other hand, new models must be found that can describe the mechanical and thermodynamic problem of accumulating ice crystals. Against this background, a project team consisting of research institutes as well as aircraft and engine manufacturers has been set up at European level to develop multidisciplinary numerical methods for the description of ice crystal icing. In addition, the project team is collaborating with North American research teams, NASA and NRC.
TU Braunschweig will carry out fundamental tests for the project in the Braunschweig Icing Wind Tunnel. For this a suitable test setup has to be designed and built. By varying a variety of experimental constraints, ice growth and ice shedding is measured and analyzed. The goal is the development of a physical understanding as well as the derivation of suitable models. Together with the French research center ONERA, the found models are to be implemented in a numerical procedure and subsequently tested. The medium-term goal after the project end is to use the developed numerical tools for the preliminary design of new aero engines.
