PhD program coordinator (f/m) (50% - 100%)
for the new International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS).
IMPRS-IS brings together the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems with the nearby universities of Stuttgart and
Tübingen to form a highly interdisciplinary graduate school of internationally renowned faculty in the fields of machine
learning, computer vision, and robotics on large and small scales. IMPRS-IS will enroll 100 doctoral students over the next
six years, providing world-leading research opportunities and the ability for students to obtain a PhD degree in our unique
graduate program. The goal of the IMPRS-IS is to investigate and understand the organizing principles of artificially intelligent
systems that can successfully interact with complex environments. Such artificially intelligent systems that perceive, act, and
learn are rapidly becoming essential to society. Consequently, IMPRS-IS is a core element of Baden-Württemberg’s "Cyber Valley"
initiative that brings together key international partners from science and industry to accelerate
research and commercial development in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
Tasks and responsibilities
The IMPRS coordinator supports the spokesperson and the executive board of IMPRS-IS. He or she will work on project development
and activities and take care of daily business and functions, including project management, the organization of meetings, workshops,
educational courses, as well as the communication with the public. Specific duties include the following:
Organization of the graduate school’s course program and establishment of concepts and agendas for the program, in collaboration with faculty
Recruitment of excellent PhD students including preparation of advertisements and interviews
Supporting students with organizational issues and keeping track of their achievements
Preparation for IMPRS board meetings
Organization of scientific workshops and conferences
Serving as the point of contact for IMPRS partner universities
Preparation of evaluation reports
Maintenance of the IMPRS-IS website
Day-to-day communication with PhD students, advisors, applicants, reviewers, and partners
The applicant should have a completed scientific higher education (and ideally a PhD) in a related scientific field such as
computer science, engineering, control theory, cognitive science, neuroscience, mathematics, or materials science, as well as
excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of standard software packages is required. We expect
very good command of both English and German (at least C1 level) as well as the willingness and capability to learn about the
research topics of IMPRS-IS. Professional experience in running structured, international PhD programs and/or in research
administration would be an asset.
Salaries will be based on TVöD guidelines according to previous experience and qualifications. The position is initially limited
to two years with the possibility of extension. Part-time as well as full-time employment is possible (50% - 100%) please indicate
