The University of Stavanger invites applications for a Ph.D research fellowship in Computer Science at Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. There will be a position in context of the Energy Informatics project: "Future Energy Hub" (FEH).
This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral degree.
The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% compulsory duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process. The position is vacant from 01.10.2019.
The research interest of the PhD would be in alignment with the project "Future Energy Hub" (FEH) which is supported by the Research Council of Norway, local industry and public partners and is led by the University of Stavanger.
The University of Stavanger and the Stavanger region aims at becoming an international power centre for the necessary transition to sustainable energy. The region has had a leading role in the development of smart cities in recent years. The project connects the expertise in ICT with energy systems from the oil, gas and renewable industry to create tomorrow's data driven microgrids, together with national and global education and research communities. FEH will cause positive effects for value creation and enable us to ICT driven develop products and services towards a growing global renewable market.
FEH focuses on distributed renewable energy and smart technology. As our energy system is changing, in order to prepare for the future, we need to develop new systems and solutions. To meet this challenge, we need increased collaboration between the industry, government and research institutions.
FEH's goal is to cause positive effects for value creation and enable us to develop products and services for a growing global renewable energy market. We are now creating an energy lab at our university campus. It will provide a testing ground and give students, industry and researchers hands on experience. Together with our partners, we will follow up pilot projects and strengthen the link between education and industry.
We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree (3+2) within Computer Science, informatics, ICT based smart energy systems or a related disciple, preferably acquired recently, preferably acquired recently; or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.
To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the Univeristy of Stavanger both the grade for your master's thesis and the weighted average grade of your master's degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade.
Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F should attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale.
Prospective applicants will focus their research within energy informatics. Prospective students must have competence in one or more of the following areas:

The department carries out research within computer science, data Science, cybernetics and signal processing, and offers bachelor programs in electrica engineering and computer science, master programs in computer science, data science and cybernetics/signal processing, and a PhD program in information technology. There are currently 50 employees, including research fellows and postdocs, and 600 students at the department.
