Call for PhD student in Distributed Systems
Simula Research Laboratory (Simula) is seeking a PhD student to work in the field of distributed systems. The student’s
research work will be conducted within a collaboration between Simula and the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) within
the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF).
The PhD student will interact closely with teams at Simula and at TU Berlin and work with an experienced team of PhD supervisors.
The PhD student is expected to pursue a research topic within the fields of networks and parallel and distributed systems that
lies within the scope of the Simula’s section for Communication Systems
and TU Berlin’s faculty for Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science. Possible research topics include (but not limited to):
Resource management in distributed systems
Reliability, trustworthiness and robustness of information flows
Paradigms for parallel programming
Future architectures for distributed systems
The candidate is expected to submit a discussion of a research topic within this scope as part of the application, argue for
its relevance and novelty, and define her/his expected contribution. This document will form a basis for potential candidates
discussions with potential supervisors.
The PhD student will be employed by Simula, but s/he will work for extended periods both in Oslo and in Berlin. The student will
aim at obtaining a PhD degree from the TU Berlin. The contractual period is 3 years. The starting date is as soon as possible.
Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located at Fornebu outside of Oslo, Norway. It is a diverse,
international and multicultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 32 countries. Simula conducts ICT research in
the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula's main objective is to generate
new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This
is achieved through high quality basic research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and
The Einstein Center Digital Futures in Berlin has been conceived as an inter-university nucleus for research on the digitalization
of our society. The aim is to foster innovative, cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, and to provide outstanding training for
talented young scholars. Research will be carried out in the core IT field of digital infrastructure, methods and algorithms, and
in the three areas of innovation: digital health, digital society and humanities as well as digital industry and services.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in one of the following or related disciplines: computer
engineering, computer science or related disciplines
Strong analytical skills as well as solid knowledge of computing and programming
Very high level of commitment, responsibility and self-initiative, and eagerness to work on challenging research problems
Practical experience with working in a team
Speak and write English at an excellent level
Good oral and written skills in scientific communication
Excellent opportunities for doing high quality research, as part of a highly competent and motivated team of international researchers
