Tübingen invite applications for the following positions within the DFG Research Unit
« Modal und Amodal Cognition: Functions and Interactions »

Positions will vary between 50 % and 100 % of employment scope. Employment is envisaged
for 1st of April 2020 and will last initially for 3 years.
The research unit deals with the question of how the human mind represents the internal
and external world. Central to this question is the distinction between modal vs. amodal
representations. The research unit proceeds from the notion that both representations play
a major role in all cognitive domains. The goal of the research unit is to unravel the functional
roles of modal and amodal representations for cognition and to investigate their interactions
in different subfields of psychology (e.g., perception, learning, language, thinking, action).
The research unit will also investigate how these representations develop, and whether
particular psychological disorders are associated with dysfunctions in one of these two
The individual research projects in the unit mainly work by means of experimental and
neurophysiological paradigms. Holders of the advertised positions will plan and conduct
scientific investigations into specified issues, will analyze and interpret the results of these
studies, will help in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, and will develop followup
The holders of the advertised positions will be intensively supported by the research unit
in obtaining a PhD in cognitive psychology and related fields or in building up his or her
qualifications as a post-doctoral researcher. The coordinator of the research unit will have
an administrative and a scientific function. In his or her administrative function, the coordinator
will be responsible for organizational issues of the research unit (managing the research
unit's workshops, coordinating the stays of the Mercator fellows, implementing central
initiatives for the support of young researchers, and equal opportunities issues). In his or
her scientific function, the coordinator will conduct research that is related to the topic of
the research unit, and will prepare his or her own project for the second funding phase of
the research unit.
What is required?
Very good Master degree or PhD in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science or
High motivation and distinctive interest in research on cognition
Very good skills in experimental procedures and statistical analyses
Programming skills (e.g., Python, R, Matlab)
Experience with scientific publishing will be of advantage
Very good English skills
