Postdoc /PhD Student Positions
in the Fabrication and Characterization
of Exploratory Nanodevices
We are looking for highly motivated researchers
(PhD students and Postdocs) for our activities
in the characterization and fabrication of
devices for future computing applications using
novel materials and eflects. In a European Union project, our group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, together with the groups of Dr. A. Gnishin (Institut Neel, Grenoble) and at IBM Research - Zurich aims to develop novel nanomaterials and devices of Weyl semimetals. Weyl physics has recently become a fascinating area of research predicting unexpected and extraordinary transport properties. The transition into nanostructures and devices, however, is yet to be made.
The project covers the entire range from fundamental materials science and physics studies of both theory and experiment, to device engineering with design, fabrication and characterization. At Max Planck, we are specifically looking for support in exploring nanomaterials growth and device fabrication techniques, on the one hand, and low-level magneto-electrical transport measurements, on the other hand. Moreover, we seek support in band structure calculations with and beyond DFT. The sample fabrication work will exploit the capabilities of our fully equipped, state-of-the-art clean for sample fabrication and a wide spectrum of characterization tools. Fundamental transport measurements are aimed at identifying transport properties related to the topological protection of chirality of the charge carriers. For this, measurement labs will be available including a dilution refrigerator.
The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and participate in a collaborative and creative group in a lively research environment. Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or a master‘s degree in physics or engineering with a strong background in nanometer-scale physics. The ideal candidate is very talented, creative, motivated, has excellent communications skills and is open to working in an international, multidisciplinary team.
Max Planck is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us, you will find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent, flexible working arrangements enable both women and men to strike the desired balance between their professional development and their personal lives.
