POSTDOC POSITION (F/M/D) COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY, BIOINFORMATICS
Institute for Zoology | Cell Biology and Systematics of Eukaryotic Microbes
The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. With its six faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.
The Hess Laboratory studies eukaryotic microbes that perforate the cell walls of algae/fungi to feed on the prey cell content. These 'protoplast feeders' are phylogenetically diverse, and the molecular background as well as the evolution of this specialised but widespread feeding strategy is still unresolved. The candidate will process and analyse transcriptome data from various protoplast feeders (e.g. vampyrellid amoebae, Idionectes, Orciraptor, Viridiraptor) and their bacterivorous relatives. The molecular data will be explored for highly expressed/regulated CAZymes, binding proteins, and cytoskeletal proteins which might be involved in the interaction with prey cells. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop and guide further RNA-seq experiments, and to participate in our biochemical studies on selected proteins.
