Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position (f/m/d) in Informatics - Optimization
Universitetet i Bergen
Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in informatics – optimization
At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within the research field of informatics – optimization. The position is for a fixed term of 4 years.
About the department
Digitization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of the society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of the society to succeed. The Department of informatics contributes to this through seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. All the groups are successfully co-funded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department offers state of art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. Due to the central role informatics plays in society, the department is in rapid growth, in the number of students, research directions, and employees. We have today about 700 students, more than 50 PhD candidates, and 150 employees, among which 35 are faculty. We recently founded the Center for Data Science (CEDAS) as an important extension of our research and education activities.
About the project/work tasks:
All employees of the department are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research and teaching. The working environment for this position will be the optimization research group. The optimization research group conducts research and teaching, in a wide variety of theoretical issues and innovative applications of Operations Research (OR), analytics, and data science. For this position, we are looking for an excellent scientist, who has experience in mathematical modelling as well as in developing (meta) heuristics to solve complex combinatorial optimization problems (e.g. in logistics, transportation or energy industries).
The optimization group is growing, and the successful applicant is expected to assist in the development of the group. She/he is also expected to be actively involved in dissemination of scientific results, recruitment of PhD and master students, research seminars, and other activites of importance to the group. The new postdoctoral researcher will be in contact with companies and other research institutes. A substantial part of her/his work will be in close collaboration with other researchers and PhD students, and will involve supervision of master students across a set of research projects. It is expected that in the research work, real-world optimization problems will be analyzed and solved, and that new scientific achievements are reported regularly. Publication of the findings in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences are deliverables of crucial importance.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within in informatics (computer science), mathematics, industrial engineering or a related field. PhD-students may apply if the defence of their PhD-thesis is planned to be completed by 31.05.2020. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
Research experience, both in mathematical modelling and in applying (meta)heuristics and exact solution methods, is a requirement. Past research must be documented in terms of a promising record of publications.
Ability to model and solve complex combinatorial optimization problems is a requirement (e.g. in logistics, transportation, or energy industries).
Experience in industry based projects is an advantage.
Ability to teach OR-related courses at the Master and Bachelor levels is a requirement.
Good programming skills (preferably in C++ or Java) will be an advantage.
Applicants must be able to work both independently and within a team, and to play a key role in the group‘s outreach activities (e.g. dissemination, student recruitment, research seminars).
It is an advantage if the applicants have a pro-active, extravert personality: taking initiative and a pragmatic attitude.
Applicants must have strong communication skills, and an excellent command of written and spoken English.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:
The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position of 4 years with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. 25% of the working time will be devoted to activities related to teaching, outreach and communication at the Department of informatics.
Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
Upon appointment, the candidate will, together with an appointed mentor, submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a progress plan. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment."
We can offer:
A good and professionally challenging working environment
Salary at pay grade 60 - 65 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 4) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 532 300 – 583 900. Further promotions are made according to length of service. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
The state labour force shall reflect the diversity of Norwegian society to the greatest extent possible. People with immigrant backgrounds and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply for the position.
We encourage women to apply. If multiple applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, the rules pertaining to moderate gender quotas shall apply.
The University of Bergen applies the principle of public access to information when recruiting staff for academic positions.
Information about applicants may be made public even if the applicant has asked not to be named on the list of persons who have applied. The applicant must be notified if the request to be omitted is not met.
