The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses crucial questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts, energy system transformation, and sustainable development. Postdoctoral Researcher Position in GHG emissions analysis for international climate change policy

The successful candidate will be working in the PRIMAP Emissions Module group. The mission of PRIMAP is to synthesize earth system science and its uncertainties for international climate policy. PRIMAP integrates three modules (emissions, climate, and impacts) to provide a complete assessment tool. The emissions module component consists of a comprehensive database and quantification toolset designed to provide up-to-date analysis of policy options and emissions scenarios in support of the international climate change negotiations and for scientific research.
Task Description
The advertised position is supported by the IMPACT and ISIpedia projects. IMPACT aims to provide state of the art strategic and scientific support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). This project is performed in cooperation with Climate Analytics (, where we at PIK provide scientific tools, data, and analysis. ISIpedia aims to develop an open, climate-impacts service portal offering tailored access to state-of-the-art climate-impacts assessments, based on simulations conducted within the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison project (ISIMIP,
The successful applicant will
  • contribute to our Matlab based greenhouse-gas emissions module to extend capabilities by managing the database, developing new tools, and performing analyses.
  • have the opportunity to select a research topic on which to focus, based on their skills, interests, and project needs. Possible topics include assessment of emissions reductions targets, mitigation costs, effort-sharing, land-use and land-use change, emissions accounting methods, and market mechanisms.
  • be expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to briefings and papers for the IMPACT project.
  • contribute to the ISIpedia project by advising on which politically relevant scenarios should be included in the portal, and the construction of those scenarios.
  • attend UNFCCC meetings, working with colleagues and experts at Climate Analytics.
Suitable candidates
  • hold a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Biology, Social Sciences, or a related field;
  • have training in scientific modelling and possess excellent data analysis skills;
  • have proficient programming skills. Candidates with experience in Matlab, Python, or R are preferred;
  • are highly motivated and have good organizational skills;
  • are team-oriented, and possess strong communication skills in English. The working language at PIK is English.
Prior experience in public or international policy is highly desirable, and the candidate is asked to demonstrate their motivation for working on international climate policy in their cover letter
