Professor in Marine Sustainability
DTU invites applications for a position as professor in the research field of Marine Sustainability. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Ecosystem Based Marine Management, and is based in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
The section for Ecosystem Based Marine Management conducts research on the direct and indirect effects of fishing and other anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. The aim is to develop knowledge and tools for use in an evidence-based ecologically and economically sustainable management. Activities of the section are structured in four research areas. Marine habitats focuses on the importance of habitats for fish stock dynamics. Fisheries technology addresses the efficiency, selectivity, and environmental impact of the fishing process. The aim is to reduce unwanted bycatch of fish, marine mammals or seabirds, and the impact on the marine environment, while improving the efficiency and competitive abilities of the fishery.
Responsibilities and tasks
The professor's research field will be to develop the foundation for sustainable blue economies, investigating how repeated disturbances interact with other pressures to elicit changes in population dynamics of commercially, ecologically important or sensitive marine species.
The successful candidate will be tasked with combining information on behavioural, biological and governance processes to develop a quantitative approach to evaluate management strategies aiming to maintain sustainable marine exploitation while ensuring economic prosperity, social coherence, good environmental status, and favourable conservation status in the context of relevant policy directives and agreements. Work will include exploring patterns of end-user behaviour-and its drivers-for key marine sectors in order to find new management schemes for key drivers of sustainability.
The professor is expected to give advice on trajectory, stability, and progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals integrating major facets of sustainability objectives and their potential conflicts and synergies. Contribution to global assessment activities and other UN activities are expected as well as contributions to the implementation of the EU Directive on Maritime Spatial Planning on national and international level.
The successful candidate is expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BSc, MSc, and PhD levels, including supervision and training of PhD students and postdocs. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.
Employment requires innovative research at the highest international level within relevant research themes, including visionary strategic development of the research area as well as planning, implementing, and running interdisciplinary research projects. The professor should have extensive experience in teaching and educational development at all academic levels, including supervision and training of PhD students and postdocs.

Condition-mediated population dynamics addressed
Computational behavioural sciences
Modelling socioecological systems
Sustainability and quantitative governance
Integrating ecosystem, economic, social and governance objectives in marine management,
Global assessments, such as the UN World Ocean Assessment, and providing advice on marine management to policy development and management authorities.
