The Van Vollenhoven Institute
The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) is part of the Leiden Law School. The VVI seeks to advance knowledge of the formation and functioning of legal systems in their social contexts, the impact of these systems on society and vice versa, their effectiveness in governance, and their contribution to development.
The Institute adopts a socio-legal and global approach, doing research on law in the books and law in action in Asia (notably Indonesia, China), Africa, the Middle East, and (Northern) Europe. VVI staff teaches several socio-legal thematic and regional courses for both Dutch and foreign exchange students. In addition, VVI provides PhD supervision, advisory services and training courses to policy makers and practitioners. The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society has a vacancy for a
The successful applicant is a scholar of international repute (F/M) with a clear overview of and insight into the role and functioning of law and legal systems in the Global South and how they interact with their societal context. She/he has ample experience with interdisciplinary research on the national and local level in the Global South and is familiar with development policies. Through case studies and country studies the chair group aggregates knowledge and contributes to developing theory on the role of law in its relation to governance and development. The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) has a strong reputation and research tradition in this field, combining legal and both qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods. The professor to be appointed will build upon this existing tradition as well as contribute to the further development of the VVI, which has recently broadened its scope from focusing solely on the Global South to also focusing on (Northern) Europe. The research of the chair group is embedded in one of the Law School’s faculty wide research programmes, entitled 'Effective Protection of Fundamental Rights in a Pluralist World’.
The successful applicant will contribute to the teaching programme of the VVI through lecturing courses at the Leiden Law School and Leiden University College. She/he will actively be involved in the development of new teaching modules including a possible Masters programme ‘Law, Governance and Society’, and will furthermore contribute to the training of policymakers and academics in the Global South.
The professor to be appointed is an academic leader with strong organizational and communication skills. She/he chairs a group of around twenty persons – including PhD candidates – in close collaboration with the other members of the departmental management. She/he actively participates in (international) networks in academia, policy, and practice, including in the field of Rule of Law promotion. She/he will have a well-established track record in obtaining research funding and will start various initiatives to acquire new external (research) funding. The successful applicant has a firm and realistic ambition to further strengthen the position of the VVI within the University, in The Netherlands as well as abroad.
Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, s/he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
Terms and conditions
Initial period of employment in this position is for 5 years, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. Salary is in accordance with the cao (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch universities) and is dependent on the candidate’s experience. Gross monthly salary is minimum € 5,260.- and maximum € 7,659.- (salary scale H2, on fulltime basis).
