UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE: HIGH TECH HUMAN TOUCH
We believe technology and people have a leading role to play in providing solutions for complex societal challenges worldwide. Central to our vision is
our High-Tech Human Touch philosophy, in which we fuse natural science, data-science, biology and engineering with social and behavioural science while
maintaining a relentless focus on societal impact. With this unique cross-disciplinary approach and excellence in scientific disciplines, our scientists,
teachers and students work every day on these global challenges:
Improving healthcare through personalized technologies
Creating intelligent manufacturing systems
Shaping our world with smart materials
Engineering our digital society
Engineering for a resilient world
FACULTY OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
Our scientists are recognized worldwide for their high-quality research. They possess the knowledge to find answers for inter-disciplinary and societally relevant problems by means of an engineering and entrepreneurial attitude. The research objectives of the faculty are to generate fundamental knowledge and to translate this knowledge into solutions for multidisciplinary technical problems. Within this context, the faculty focuses on the integrated value chain. The industrial and societal relevance of the research is secured by close collaboration with industry and the public sector.
In our education, we aim to educate the engineers of the future to become T-shaped professionals who are able to acquire new knowledge themselves, able to apply this knowledge in a meaningful way and able to create innovative solutions for the new and complex challenges of industry and society. We do this through student-driven learning and project-led education, and by training students in the three different roles that they can adopt, i.e. Researcher, Designer or Organizer.
DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN, PRODUCTION & MANAGEMENT (DPM)
The Department of Design, Production & Management focuses on research, education and application of the broad industrial design process, ranging from the analysis of
context and users to the realization of products and product service systems. DPM applies and advances conceptual and empirical methods of design research and contributes
to knowledge on the design of business models, production, design for behaviour change, human-product interaction, and co-creation. The department has access to excellent
infrastructures, such as the DesignLab
(www.utwente.nl/designlab/), and the Smart Industry Lab and VR-Lab
(https://www.utwente.nl/en/et/vrsilab/), and works with globally leading research and technology institutes, such as the Fraunhofer Project Center
MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS AT UT
Manufacturing systems transform scarce resources into products and are therefore at the core of the general transition towards Smart Industry (Industry 4.0). This implies a need to focus on the understanding and improvement of manufacturing systems and the related design processes for such systems. The research should involve design for intelligent manufacturing systems, ranging from synthesis approaches and tools, via the development of Smart Industry (Industry 4.0) and lean manufacturing concepts to address more general production management-oriented challenges. The manufacturing system research involves the holistic consideration of products, production, and product lifecycles, based on sophisticated and groundbreaking modelling methods and information-driven technologies for production environments.
