Your role

The chair is attached to the Department of Mathematics (RMATH) and related to the Computational and Data Science priority of the university. This permanent position will be funded, for the first 5 years, by the SanDAL ERA Chair project, recently selected for funding within the European Commission’s H2020 Framework Programme, with a total budget of 2,5M €. It will allow the development of a new direction of research in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science, currently not present at the University of Luxembourg.

The successful candidate will be expected to build a new research direction and a strong research group in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science, within the Mathematics Department (RMATH).

(S)he will also be expected to contribute to develop interdisciplinary projects involving Statistics and Data Science across the Luxembourgish research and innovation landscape, collaborating, as required, with scientists from other fields and with industry. (S)he will have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the Computational and Data Science research priority at the University of Luxembourg.

The new professor will be expected to develop a new program in Statistics and Data Science within the existing Master in Mathematics, and to supervise PhD candidates in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science within the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering, possibly within the Computational and Data Science cross-cutting doctoral programme. (S)he and her/his research group may also provide teaching in Statistics and Data Science at the Bachelor and Master level in other programs.

Your profile

The successful candidate will have made first-rate contributions to fundamental and applied aspects of Mathematical Statistics and Data Science. (S)he will have a demonstrated potential as a first-rate researcher.

Examples of areas of research could be: Probabilistic Aspects of High-Dimensional Data, Topological Data Analysis, Computational Statistics, Signal Reconstruction and the Mathematics of Sparsity, Bayesian Methods, Computational Statistics and Statistical Modelling, Model Reduction and Selection, Statistical Inverse Problems, Rare Events, Uncertainty and Risk Quantification, Robust Estimation in Non-Linear Models, etc.

(S)he will have a successful experience in teaching Mathematics, Statistics and/or Data Science, and be willing to contribute to the teaching missions of the university at the bachelor, master and doctoral level, as well as in administrative tasks. (S)he will have a proven track-record of administration of research, and will be willing to manage (with administrative support) the ERA Chair project funding the position.

Qualifications, experience, aptitude
  • Ph.D. in mathematics or related field,
  • A minimum of five years post-doctoral experience in a university or comparable research centre.
Languages
The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual and multicultural context. For this position, a good knowledge of English is required, as well as a working knowledge of either French or German.
